I may not be a fan of all his policies, but Gov. Inslee’s decision to impose the shutdown early on was a good call. Washington State seems to be doing rather well with this crisis thanks to his early and decisive actions.

As someone who takes their role in public safety seriously, I understand the government’s #1 responsibility is ensuring the public’s well-being, even when the measures taken aren’t understood or popular. Kudos to Inslee for doing the right thing here and saving lives. I have a new-found respect for the man.

I don't like Inslee's belief system of govt and his policies at all.

Except....for his handling of this virus.

He's been one of if not the, most proactive in the country.

Inslee gets an "A" on this in my book, while many other federal, state and local leaders around the country get an "F."

Kudos to Inslee.

1) Identify the problem
2) Calculate the most effective solution (using and LISTENING TO experts)
3) Execute the strategy

WA did 'OK' but... There is room for (much) improvement,

In 'Comparison to others in USA' WA did VERY good.

but that is like being a USA 'public schooled student'... OK is not very internationally competitive.

We (USA and WA) had adequate warning and resources and international collaborators to handle this far better than we did.

Too bad (just like public schools) the LEAST prepared and effective states will control the national 'return-to-normalcy' / cross state-line travel and commerce.

Don't hold your breath, and see how Inslee responds to THAT threat! (neighbors / visitors / tourism / business from states that don't give-a-rip. )

That will be yet another influential and very dangerous decision.

So sad that Politics is running this show. I can't think of a worse way to lead during a crisis.
Politicians should IMPLEMENT the details of the informed, studied and invested professionals, then support the required actions mandated by those who have the knowledge and skillset to evaluate and guide and SOLVE the issue.

Taiwan is an interesting example of success for controlling COVID-19 in the middle of a very caustic relationship with China. Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore did admirably considering their transient population and proximity and vast number of Chinese moving about during CNY.

USA would have been an EZ solution. (in January)

I agree with you both. I don't usually like Inslee's policies, but he did great this time.

just some 'perspective' (This is not OVER yet...)

Today (15 April 2020) in ONE day

USA has 30,206 NEW cases(37% of China total for 4 months...) 2,482 deaths (75% of China total for 4 months...)= 86 deaths/m
WA has 115 new cases, 25 deaths = 78 deaths/m (still! ONE day, and ONLY the reported / confirmed Covid 'assigned' cases (most poeple I know have not been tested YET)

China for last 4 months+ (reported(?)) 82,295 TOTAL cases 3,326 Deaths (Total) = 2 deaths / m
Taiwan 395 TOTAL cases 6 deaths = 0.3 deaths/m - remember... Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong are VERY urbanized (metro centers with high contact - NYC style). Each had very early cases (before risk was known) and NONE of them have deaths exceeding 0.6 / m

BTW, my friends in China (USA and National) feel quite safe and glad to be THERE rather than HERE!

USA gets an F-
WA gets a D-

IMHO (since I don't do 'school')

USA totally blew it, and there are obvious reasons (terrible HC system but 'excellent' medical technology and scads of research / world NGO exposure )

BIG disconnect.
Our enemies are watching (very closely).
We have a LOT of enemies

Except for a few places the whole world is overreacting to what is just another strain of the flu. In the past we did nothing and people died. That's the nature of the flu, you can't protect against every bug that comes along.

Washington also significantly ramped up testing early, using state, university, and other labs. As of a few weeks ago, Washington had tested 50% more per capita than any other state. Each positive test result is someone quarenteed and, hopefully, no longer spreading the infection.

I give Inslee good marks for keeping citizens informed and educated while keeping a sane tone.

And not that it really matters right now, easy re-election.
