Croatia does have some awesome climates with wetter summers. I think the reason for the mild winter lows is the moderating influence of the Adriatic Sea. As for the summer not being dry compare to "typical Mediterranean climates in California that's due to there being no cold California Current. For me is was Mount Perisher (Australian Alps) when I was 17, we went down there on a ski trip, we did get sleet occsionaly in the area west of Brisbane i grew up in, I dont think it ever truly snowed however.

I think warmer winter minimums are due to more cloud cover in winter, as the sea temp there, is colder in winter than here.

Another example of a place that is more Oceanic in winter, than actual Oceanic climates.
