We hit 11C/52F today, and might even reach 55F tomorrow. A far cry from Chicago's 70's, but still impressive considering that the average high is 2C/36F this time of the year.

The high pressure will move into Russia and opens up the arctic highway, so the weekend looks very cold. Highs around freezing and a real chance for sleet or snow.

Air quality plummets with dry sunny weather

After a winter with little snow, sunny, dry weather has let dust loose. Alarmingly poor air quality has been measured in many parts of the country over the past days.

In Hämeenlinna, the air quality measurement went off the Finnish Meteorological Institute scales on Thursday night, dipping below ‘very bad’. Late on Thursday, up to 500 milligrams of inhalable particles per cubic metre were measured. The normal limit for good air is at 20 mg per cubic metre.
In Järvenpää, the limit was topped fifty-fold, as 1000 mgs of particulate matter per cubic metre was measured.

Chicago's average high is 47F/8C for March 16th, and we are expecting a high of 75-77F (24-25C). That's 17C above average

The fun is over for us tomorrow as well. There might be a 12C difference within the metro area tonight as the coldfront swoops down Lake Michigan

Even with the above normal temps the last week or so, we will probably end up below average month

actually.... 6-10 day looks progressive

On second thought the 11-15 day looks cold

The ONLY place in Europe which hit 20C today was Southern Spain. Even on the Moroccan and Algerian coasts it's like 17C today. So the very warm air is definitely quite far from us.

Still, the month so far has been 4C above average...

Bah. We're going to just miss 50°F today, though we reached it last Tuesday. Considering how cold our last month was, much colder than yours, we still reached 50°F first. I forgot how slow your warm-up is.

I assume those very cold months you've gotten was from a stuck high pressure bringing continuous arctic airflow. And unlike here, sun is too weak to do much warming in the winter.

Yes, as the Arctic is still very cold, we're quite close to cold fronts. Also, Central Europe isn't that warm either this time of the year, so warm air is quite far. Northern Italy is colder than us today.

That's correct. High pressure and northerly or easterly winds will often bring very cold weather in winter. Now the sun has that much strength that we won't go below freezing during the day, but will still be cold. Everything is possible in March.

850 temps tomorrow morning:

We're forecast to have a high below freezing on Wednesday. Dry, subarctic influx so with sunshine. March 23, 2012 reached 82°F. Everything is possible in March Today, it clouded over late morning so it won't reach 50°F. 43°F now. Might warm up a bit.

Interesting that in your setup Russia to the east is warmer. You're getting literally arctic air rather than subarctic air.
