Be careful where you look. Buncombe County votes blue and there are a real rash of those socialists around these parts -- particularly in Asheville.

Depending on where your job offer is it sounds like you might want to include eastern Tennessee on your list.

You'll be welcome in the Asheville area. Patriots always are. We're not all sheep.

"No, *Asheville* votes blue. The rest of the county votes red."

Buncombe County is the blue one in the sea of red.

OP--Wife and I are New Englanders (like you, but we live up north in a very rural area) and have just returned from 5 days in AVL--our own scouting mission to see if it's where we'd like to relocate. You can read every thread on this site, but you have to visit the place (any place) before you can even begin to understand if it's somewhere you'll like. This is what we found: It's a lot like Burlington VT in many respects, except bigger and easier to navigate. People are very friendly. There are tons of very good, inexpensive and interesting restaurants; music is everywhere downtown; parking is easy and cheap (the only traffic back up we were in occurring when we tried to leave the parking garage on Sat night about 10 pm); if you're interested in outdoor sports, eg mt biking (we are) and hiking, AVL and surrounding area is perfect. As previous posters have written, within 10-15 minutes of driving it's very rural. Towns we liked just outside the city were Black Mt and Weaverville. We left AVL with a very favorable feeling that we could be very content living there.

sovertennis ~~ I'm glad you enjoyed your visit.

One small quibble with your description. Downtown parking can quickly become a bear if there is something going on at the Civic Center.

RVT is correct, of course you are welcome here.....and we are not ALL sheep. You will know the sheep by the way they have been led into thinking this is a scary place and you need protection from "Others".
A friendly smile may be glaring to the eyes but it is not dangerous.

You're welcome.

You make the mistake of thinking Asheville == Buncombe County. Just because Asheville outnumbers those in the suburbs and therefore makes the totals for the county look blue does not mean that the county votes the same way. Witness the results from the NC house elections, where all of WNC is a "sea of red".

Your response is so profoundly off-base it is hard to know how to respond. You make the obvious point that Asheville is not the entirety of Buncombe County yet offer the district map as proof that Buncombe County doesn't vote blue? If you can't see that the district (which includes Buncombe) isn't the same as Buncombe than I can't help.

Following your logic I guess I could mention that there where 1.1 million more D votes than R votes for House seats nationwide in the 2012 election, the final (gerrymandered) outcome notwithstanding.

This post made me smile, thanks. My thoughts on sheep exactly.

Huh. I think the "gerrymandered" districts you refer to are blue. They are the ones that squiggle across the map like a lubricated squid. The districts that have smooth shapes are the ones that voted red.
