Not only do American workers get less vacation time than workers in other industrialized countries, but they also opt to take fewer days off.
The average employed American worker got 18 vacation days last year, but only used 14 of those desirable days off, according to a 2010 survey by Expedia.com.
Meanwhile, those four forfeited days of vacation per person add up quickly. Altogether, Americans gave up 448 million earned but unused vacation days in 2010. Considering the average wage of $39,208 for a full-time worker -- that's $67.5 billion worth of time.
I save up (don't use) vacation or PTO days until I hit the "use or loose" point and I bank as much as I can because if I get laid off, those days are equivalent to a month's cash flow.

We have to use them up each year, or lose them. So, yes, I do use all of them.
I get 20 vacation days, 2 personal days, and 10 sick days. I can carry over 10 vacation days and 5 sick days.
I keep rolling them over, because I keep thinking;a) I'm going to go off on some glorious vacation some year; or 2) I'm going to get really sick and/or fired or laid off some year ...
It's a lot of vacation time, and toward the end of the year I often scramble to take a day here or there to use up the vacation time that can't be carried over.
I don't use up the sick days; those are banked and used as long-term sick time (after 5 days).
This how nonprofit social service organizations compensate their workers. We don't get paid much, but our health insurance is paid, and we get lots of time off (and are encouraged to use it).
I have never been lucky enough to work anywhere that allows vacation or sick days to accrue.
I would never in a million years forfeit earned vacation days , even if I'm just staying in bed all day!!!
I have sometimes used a slew of Dr appointments made on the same day to coax a "sick day" out of bosses who would turn a blind eye to that kind of behavior from me, simply because I almost never use all my sick days (5 a year, period). But I have never used a sick day for leisure.
And no, a migraine isn't just a "headache," and I can't just take a couple of aspirin and come in later. Are you hearin' me Gordie?!?!
So I have forfeited sick days, but never vacation days!!!
I get 15 vacation days (in addition to our office being closed the week between Christmas and New Years). We don't really have a rollover policy, instead, once I hit 15 banked vacation days, I cannot accrue further vacation time.
I make sure that time is used every year - we usually take two, full-week vacations somewhere every year and sprinkle in a few long weekends in between.
We don't have "sick time" - if you're sick, you stay home (work from home if you can, take your NyQuil and sleep if you can't). Our company is pretty casual on that unless someone is calling out sick "a lot".
