On my last regular office job I had 5 weeks PTO (which included sick, vacation, personal, family, etc.) and we could only carry over a week.

I carried over a week every year - was always making sure I had time left in case of an emergency.

Carry over time is always a plus.

Everywhere I've worked it's been X number of paid vacation days, depending on how long you've been there, and 5 strictly sick days (also paid). You lost anything you didn't use by your anniversary.

Unless the job was part-time, then it's 0 paid days off for any reason, which is how they get ya nowadays.

I always use all vacation days, but usually keep my rollover amount maxed too. I know people that don't take all their days, they are typically the type that think the business is going to fall apart if they don't show up and save the day. Which of course isn't true, but hey, if you really think you are impressing anyone by wasting time off, go for it.

Sick days I don't always use, since they accumulate, but I won't hesitate to take one if I'm actually sick. I wish others would do this too, but the same people that skip their vacation days tend to be the ones that show up sick as hell, coughing and sneezing all over everyone.

I see more and more companies going to a combined vacation/sick days pool, and I hope it continues to spread.

PTO is considered a benefit so they actually take out more taxes.

If you can, and you don't trust your employers, by all means use them!!!! I hadn't used all of mine up when they made me take a pay cut. They took most of them away.

I get 18 vacation days per year. So far, I've used 40s hr of vacation this year and my accumlated vacation hours are 258. We can carry over 300 hours I think. I'm not sure.

I donated 8 vacation hours to an unamed co-worker who needed sick leave pay. I wish we could donate sick leave hours instead. I've got 610 of those. Vacation is paid out if I quit or get fired. Sick leave is not.

We can bank up to 320 hours of time. We can also bank up to 48 hours of discretionary bonus time. We get 16 hours of discretionary bonus time a year on top of in my case 160 hours of vacation time. On top of that our sick time is bundled up at a rate of 48 hours a year that we can use for any purpose. That gives me a total of 224 hours a year that I can use, or up to five weeks and 3 days of time a year. I seldom use it all. Most of the time I cash some of it out. We can cash up to 80 hours a year and we can also cash out our discretionary bonus pay for a total of 96 hours of cashed out time a year leaving me with 3 weeks and 1 day a year of time to use.

I earn a decent enough amount of Personal Time Off (which is also used for short-term sick leaves). I'm not interested in hoarding hundreds of hours like a lot of people do ~ I work to live. I take my vacations every year. And there are individual days off once in awhile, and appointments to cover. However, I always try to keep no less than 80 hours in case I get sick for several days. I do have medical conditions.
