I've been in the sales and marketing field for the past 15 years, specifically as an account manager. Since getting downsized two years ago account manager jobs have been about as rare as unicorns. The only type of sales jobs that I see out there are highly technical medical/engineering type sales jobs or entry level jobs selling office equipment. Just getting comfortable to the fact that the job I have now will be the best one I can get for the 4-5 years. Enough to keep a roof over my head and groceries on the table.
In my immediate circle of friends there are at least 5-6 guys that I know that are highly trained sales people or have professional training like a CPA or architect who can't find work. All of them are in their 30's and 40's and the prospects of a decent job anytime soon are slim.
I agree with grimi66 - probably the same age. I sold to fortune 500 companies and actaully most of the Fortune 10.. And yet, I can't find a company that wants a top sales professional - it is all "entry level".

I actually know many more recent college graduates out of work than people middle aged. In fact, where I work there have been 3 recent hires at 60-75k pay levels that were between ages 50 and 60.

Sold for a Fortune 1000, Fortune 500 and an Inc 500 (privately held companies) and can't even get a phone interview. Not looking to get rich, but just want a good old fashioned territory account manager job that gives you a car & hotel allowance, let's me hit the road 2-3 days a week and base myself out of my home office. It's frustrating because when I started out in sales, it was the guys (and some women) in their 40's and early 50's that were the most desirable and I saw many of my older co-workers snatched up in bidding wars between companies.
Trying to put a good spin on things, at least I have a solid ( but low paying) job. My friends and co-workers that had the high power and high paying VP of Sales, National Account Manager jobs that paid 6 figures are mostly unemployed right now or are "consultants".
well, we know that there are actually plenty of jobs out there, ready for takers at pretty much any time.
but then again, many people prefer unemployment to taking these jobs, which they consider to be beneath them.
i write this as i read an article about how despite California's ridiculously high unemployment rate, San Diego manufacturers just can't find any workers
