I interviewed the other day at Amazon for a position called "Hazardous Material Specialist." It's an $18/hr, 50-60hrs/wk job that would be my best option after 10 months and over 500 applications to try and capitalize on my education. I really hope I get it. Funny thing is, I could've got that job straight out of high school. It doesn't even require a college degree.
Right now I'm fantasizing about where I would be if I got that job and never went to college. Since I'm a smart and usually motivated guy, I'm sure I would have worked my up the totem poll and maybe taught myself some programming and get in one of the lucrative positions I've tried to get after graduating college. I'm nowhere right now.
there are plenty of people that make millions of dollars and never had a college degree. a degree is a little more than just making more money at a job though.
get the job first and then fantasize about it later. 18$/hr at an average of 55 hrs per week is 51480/yr.
come on. you couldnt make that work for you? just a hint of IT skill could pull you in big bucks. No openings in Risk management or regulatory departments? Python with applied math skills (aka quants) make around $180/hr in an average IB. Data analyst (mostly SQL reporting) from $120/hr too
what I dont get is why you fresh grad guys keep applying for name brand companies

People can point to Steve Jobs and Bill Gates all they want, but a college degree will affect your earnings in the future. My niece has a mathematics degree and got a great job with a great income right out of college as an actuary with an insurance company with the potential for much higher future income. Don't forget, when manufacturing was big in the US, there were lots of people saying they did not need a degree to make money. Those jobs are now gone.

i dont think anyone is saying college is worthless but we push it on everyone and its not for everyone. i wish i would have heard about trade schools and technical training instead of just " you have to go to college if you want to be successful." also if your going to college do like your niece did and do something which has a practical use and not leisure studies, communications, history, etc

I know LOTS of guys making good wages and they never blew a wadd on college...I also know college degrees working menial jobs cause that's all they can find. If a good paying job comes available...take it. These days a college degree doesn`t neccesarily mean a better paying job...just some guaranteed debt is all.
I feel the same way. I don't know if I'd have an actual job by now but at least I wouldn't have a loan to worry about. It was a waste because there's no employment programs that I can find through the school.

Post a link to the job listings for these alleged jobs that I could be getting. Funny how I've combed the entirety of every job board for the last 10 months and never found anything, yet you know of all these promising entry-level jobs.
I don't only apply for name-brand companies; however, I've had the most success with them. Small companies, having fewer resources, are less likely to invest in a fresh grad who doesn't have years of experience under his belt.
