So I arrived at work for my first day and all of my furniture was in my office...... in boxes.

My boss goes "do u think this will be hard to put together?"
Naturally, I said "i dont know....."...cuz I dont... I'm not a carpenter/contractor who assembles furniture.

So here I am with a screwdriver and ratchet in hand putting together some chairs. I didn't sign up for this

is this like a thing now? Do offices expect their new employees to assemble their own office furniture?

Boy, there is a red flag if ever I saw one.

Not a thing, but definitely sounding the bell for the kind of company you'll be working for.

At least you get new furniture. Just be sure not to do it very quickly or they'll have you assemble the stuff for the next new guy.

You couldn't just say you have a bad back or make up some other excuse? I would have. I would have also asked if they have somebody at the company who usually "assembles" furniture? What if you hurt yourself while "assembling" it? You could sue them, you know. it's not part of your job description, then why even do it?

I would start looking for new job at this point. I think it'll go downhill from here for you.I'm serious.

I have to be honest.

If it's a small business and they are making you do this, it's not a big thing. For all you know this could be a test for problem solving. They obviously don't have the resources and they want to rely on you.

Personally, I would do it. I mean, you have new furniture.

But that's just me. I wouldn't have an issue doing it, but I would have been forewarned so I could dress appropriately.

Aren't you the guy who had to go through countless interviews at this outfit, for a sub-50K job? And now the furniture assembly... It sure doesn't look good.

Not a big deal at a small company or a start-up. Who else do you think is going to do it? But if it's a big, established company, that IS pretty weird.

I was once given a used office chair that had a big grease stain in the head rest area. Disgusting!
