Sounds like you have one of those; if you can live with the fact that you aren't getting promoted. Work is not and should not be your number one priority as you indicated.

Sometimes it really is hard to have it all.

I stepped out of a management position and back into a field position for the freedom. Comes in mighty handy with a school age child. I made good money and was still able to shuttle him to/from swim practice; volunteer at the school; serve on the board of the swim team.

NOW, I have to make peace with the fact that he is grown and gone and my career is . . .nonexistent.

My friends remind me that my company gave me all the freedom in the world - when I really needed it. Now, if I'm stuck where I'm at - I still need to give them my best.

The grass isn't always greener on the other side. Unless you can work your way up the ladder to upper management positions (with perks, travel and the extra money), I don't think management route is the way to go.

Most middle management jobs sucks. You're dealing with crap from the higher ups, and the below you.. And most of those jobs are salaried where you aren't even getting paid for the overtime you work.

To me, unless you're higher up with all the perks, autonomy etc. Its not worth it.

It's pretty hard to get to upper management without going through middle management first.
