Let's say you have a job you are for the most part satisfied with, the pay and benefits are good but you likely will never get promoted and you're not sure how your boss feels about you. Would you stay or move on knowing that you might not end up at a company that's ad good as the one you're at now?
I'll probably never get promoted at my current job (except perhaps a change in title to senior chemist) and I'm fine with it. I earn a pretty good pay, I have reasonable work load and work 40 hours, and I don't trust most other companies, especially the large ones with several layers of management looking to bleep you over to save a buck when they don't even know what you do. I'm not very happy about being trapped in Illinois but I feel I have to compromise on that.
It really depends on *why* you won't get promoted. Can you do anything to change it? If I were unhappy about the situation, I'd keep my eyes open for something else.
Depends on where you are in your life and career. In a very general sense, if I was closer to the end(ish) of my career, I'd be more likely to stay. So when I'm in my 50's for example, I'd be more inclined to stay on until retirement.
Well the thing that bugs me is that I feel pressure to move on. I know my colleagues likely will. I feel kind of ashamed to stay there and not move on but I just don't see myself moving up. I almost don't want to deal with applying for another job there and I know my boss won't just say hey were promoting you. The job has become A lot more technical since I started and sometimes I feel like I'm hanging on. I also had a baby recently and while my job is important it's not #1 in my life. Agh.

No.
I'm in my 20s though. If I was in my 40s or 50s, I might give you a different answer. The idea of doing the same thing for the next 40 years or so, there's just no way.
I agree with G-fused, but I am in my 50's. I've had a couple of job offers that would move me from VP to C-level, but I'm not interested in making a change at this point that will only require more hours on my part. In my younger years, I would not have stayed in a company where there was no opportunity for me to advance.
But that's me. I wanted a career and not a job. I knew the tradeoff would be more stress and more hours, and I was okay with that.
If you don't want additional stress and hours, if you want a job and not a career, then that's your choice. A career may not make you happy. If that's the case, and you're fine with possibly getting to a point where you're maxed out on what you can make, then it's a good choice for you.
We make a mistake thinking everyone should want the same thing where work is concerned, in my opinion.
I guess I don't feel like I have a career yet I feel like I've tried. I went back and got my masters even. I work in tech support in the higher ed industry. I don't know what else I can do and I'm kind of tired of trying. I am 36 and I have the same job as a 25 yr old. The 25 yr old will actually probably be promoted. I feel like I've missed the boat on getting ahead. People look at someone my age and think if they haven't moved on they never will. So I feel stuck in my job mainly because I need a paycheck. It's depressing
I agree with the others on the reasoning why you will never get promoted. And it also depends on age, career stage, family life, etc.
I know a lot of people that are happy where they are, and rather not have that extra responsibility.
And I know a lot of people where they're at a point where it's essentially a "terminal" position. I'm in executive management - so a promotion would be the CEO. Don't want it.
I am ok with where I am in some ways but since its kind of entry level i Imagine people want folks in these positions to move on. I work at a startup so it's tough to tell what will become of the company. Seems like people leave every week then new people come on board.
I wish I'd stayed at the last place I worked at. Seems like most people just retire there and there's not lots of pressure to move up.
