I have no idea what this means, I am not retired, and there are no follow ups, Im just distressed over what to do.

" amoung other things " indicates that there is a whole lot more to the story. Did you bother to ask what these "amoung other things" were, or did you just decide to focus on what you could twist into some evil bad employer reaction to play on the anti-employer sentiment?

If I were directed to do something I believed might be unlawful and had no recourse within my organization, I would quietly seek legal counsel so I would understand my obligations. I certainly wouldn't just take the suspect action and hope for the best. Regardless of the outcome, I'd probably be job hunting.

Why latch onto the age comment but not "among other things"?
I'm not saying the company is completely innocent but it seems like it's not only about her age.

Good grief this place is hostile.

I actually did, im not trying to twist anything, I was just posting asking for opinions on how to proceed, not whatever youre trying to accuse me of.

Do as you were told if you value a paycheck.

It's not risk free to do as you are told, unless the person telling is willing to put it in writing. If OP fires the woman and the woman sues or successfully complains to a level of management above OP's boss, OP could get fire for cause (i.e. fired for illegally firing somebody) and have no way to show she was acting on orders.

It is unfortunate if that is in fact, the only real reason, but there is nothing you can do about it. The employee is a "big girl" and will more than likely figure it out for herself and take whatever steps she thinks are necessary if she feels there was something illegal about it. Regardless, if this is the decision management has made, if you wish to keep your own position, you will have to comply with their wishes.
