I'm afraid that if I come in the next day and tell him I was offered a position that's a better fit for me, he might put two and two together and realize that's why I didn't work, which could leave a bad impression.
I think the quitting with 2 days notice will take care of the bad impression.. Not that you took a day off for the interview.
Tell him asap, in person, and also put in it a letter which you hand him - keep a copy.
Make both your letter and anything you say fairly formal and be nice - say you've learned a lot, enjoyed your work, etc. but a better opportunity has arisen and due to economic reasons, you are taking this opportunity to better your circumstances. Thank him for training you and providing an interesting work environment ("interesting" can cover a lot). If giving two weeks' notice is expected, apologize for the short notice but emphasize that this opportunity had to be accepted immediately.
Or - is there a possibility you could work both jobs for the next couple of weeks, to avoid the two-week notice thing and to preserve your reputation at the job you're leaving, in case you need a reference later on?
You do realize that if you give any kind of notice you will still be let go on the spot ? VERY common these days . Just man up and tell your boss that you are moving on . You don't need his approval . If he cut's you loose that day , so be it .
I'm thinking I'll either come to work early tomorrow to tell them in person I'm quitting and apologize for it being such short notice. Or just calling in and saying the same thing.

No don't just call in. Type up the letter tonight and give it to him tomorrow and hand it in. Go in early if you want.
Salary or commission? Employee or independent contractor? Benefits or no benefits? Don't just jump if you have everything to lose.
