Australia in general is very ethnic orientated and it goes beyond soccer hooligans, those of Greek, Serbian, Croatian, Italian etc heritage consider themselves to be that nationality as opposed to Australian, by contrast my Greek relatives in New York come across as genuine Americans whilst retaining their proud Greek heritage.
In terms of the Macedonian issue not many of them seem to live in the States so its not an issue that affects the American Greek community much, however cities like Melbourne and Toronto have large Greek/Macedonian communities and that causes tension.
That's what I think of the US. Even those who criticise it, or maybe especially those who do, love their country dearly. I think most Americans of all affiliations still believe in 'America' they just have a different idea of what a perfect America would be. Maybe certain political elements have hijacked the idea of 'patriotism' to support things like the military, for instance.
That's the difference between conservatives and liberals. Liberals also love their country and care about it, but there are a lot of things they would like for it change to make it even better. Conservatives think that America is perfect they way it is and doesn't need to change, and they feel that because liberals want to change a few things, then that means they hate America and should go live in a communist country instead.
My point is i think a lot of countries dont like argentinians (for a variety of reasons that i could analize in other posts) but argentinains usually like other countries. Specially europeans, yeah, cause argentinians idiosincracy was built over a bunch of snob thinkers that thought europe was the ideal place on earth.
There is also a big rivalry between Chile and Argentina, the Chileans being more disciplined, German-like, the Argies chaotic. And now this "unpatriotic nation" is again making loud noises against the UK over the Falklands (the keyword here is oil). They should get over it, it would be better for their sanity (BA is the 1st city in the world in ratio psychoanalyst/population, that says a lot on the mental state of some people down there), for the UK will NEVER -I repeat it in case you don't get the message : NEVER relinquish the Falklands.
Argentinians are patriotic, but not in the Hispanic way. They are patriotic in the "Italian" way. Their patriotism is more related to an Alberto Sordi movie. Argentinians have that "Fatalism" thing...They also have "la Mamma" thing..
They believe that their nation is great, but "the Goddess of Fortune" has placed too many Argentinians on their soil. They believe there's a predestination that makes them vote to populist creeps like Cristinita Kitchner....they believe that their moruchos and descamisados are worse than Roman plebs, etc...They believe that they are incapable of having a honest politicians, etc. And just as Italians, they make fun of anything that sounds barely serious.
They are not stranded Europeans in America, they are Italians.
On the other hand, people outside BA and the great BA are entirely different.

Exactly. "Conservative" is based on the word "conserve", and on largely conserving things the way they have always been.
Yeah patriotism was the reason they didn't become part of the US in 1812. Patriotism for Britain, that is. Canada just never struck me as having a very long-standing nor deeply-ingrained national identity that was distinct. While in many ways we are not distinct, and were tied to the mother country by the apron strings, Australian patriotism has always been very strong.
You are correct that Canadian patriotism/nationalism has traditionally been very subdued, but in recent years "Canadian pride" (in its various manifestations) has grown considerably, and Canada today is in my opinion one of the countries where you see the most flags and people wearing t-shirts, jackets, hats, etc. with the country's name or symbols on them.
