So, I've noticed that a Quebec TV network is now showing the Dutch program Adam & Eve, which is kind of like a nude version of Survivor.
Interesting because we rarely get Dutch TV shows, especially not reality-type shows.
The sound is in Dutch with French subtitles.
Also, genital areas are blurred out as are women's breasts. But buttocks are constantly visible. The censorship is not ''tight'' like with American networks, so you get occasional ''peeks".
I looked it up and we in Quebec are getting the version made for France where there apparently was a bit of a controversy over the censorship. People wondered why it should be censored in France when it was not in the Netherlands.
They could have shown the uncensored version in Quebec without too much brouhaha IMO.
In Canada... in the province of Ontario, at least... it's perfectly legal for women to be topless in public. A woman ticketed for public nudity challenged her case in court many years ago, and won the right for women to be topless in public, just as men were legally allowed to do so.
Yet, women never take advantage of this legal right. We could be topless at the beach if we so chose. Still, everyone's too shy about it.
Social "norms" have more to do with acceptance of nudity than laws. Who decides social norms, though? It's a mystery.
