Interesting how two ideas have emerged, from opposing camps, on the basis of seemingly no evidence: from Chavez' deputy, that he was taken out by the CIA; from the conservative establishment both in Venezuela and elsewhere that he was a dictator who rigged elections. I can see circumstantial reasons why people might believe either of those things, but we are yet to see anything more than circumstantial.

If it did emerge that Chavez' election victories were without democratic merit, would this undermine him as a figure? Of course. But it's pathetic for establishments in the West to pretend that this is the question determining the esteem in which they hold him.
What a phoney you are. Like you Irish didn't bad mouth the US continuously under Bush, and make it your business our elected leader. Shove it.
I'm left of center, and while I agree with his stance on the poor, he was a sworn enemy of the US. I'd like to see what stand you would take to a sworn enemy of your dear old Ireland. You like how he hobnobbed with the Iranian dictator, and Assad? He would have been overjoyed if Iran detonated a nuclear weapon in the US. I guess you would still be on here singing his praises after such a thing.
Sure, his choice in friends It was mostly just talk. He didn't do anything that much against the US substantial. And his comments about Bush smelling of sulfur were just funny. The elections may not have been fair (he rigged the media coverage and hobbled his opponents campaigns), but a lot of developing countries don't have the fairest elections. But a large portions of the Venezuelan electorate liked him and for good reason. If Venezuelans want him, that's their choice. Here's a South American perspective:
I don't know either but the concepts of Manifest Destiny and the Monroe Doctrine have certainly not endeared us in Latin America and considering our constant meddling in the affairs of other American nations I certainly can't blame those nations for being uncomfortable with the US at the least. Will we ever learn?
You are talking history, nobody remembers that!!! When some crackpot Caudillo starts to bash Americans or Spanish conquistadors, or some foreign insect for plagues that should have been erradicated by his government, etc...then, you have a opportunistic scoundrel, a thief, it's just money and power and they couldn't care less for the people, more so if the people are "chusmera". They just use chusmera as a kleenex, and they would wipe them all if it fits their interests.

Sorry, but this is fact-free and scarcely coherent.

That has to be the most negative post of the week.
RIP Hugo Chavez. A truly great and inspirational leader. A man who stood up to US imperialism and who prevented Venezuela's oil from falling into corporate hands. He was no dictator.
I hope that one day, a movie is made about him. Not many people in the US will see it, but he should go down as one of history's great leaders.
