In the Car Talk forum, one person is complaining about problems with the Idol Control on his Honda.
I strongly considered suggesting that he become an iconoclast, but then I decided to just maintain my silence...for a change.
Apparently the preferred way to pronounce the word "always" in now "Oh-ways"
I started hearing some of the younger coworkers (early 20's) saying "Oh-ways" months ago but now it seems nearly everyone at my place of employment is saying it. Even my coworkers who are in their 60's are saying "Oh-ways."
Did I miss the memo on this? Our billing manager, who is old enough to be on Medicare just told me, "Oh-ways, OH-WAYS turn in your expense report by the end of the week."

Words...fail me...
That just goes to show what happens when you don't have any thinks in yer life.

I just couldn't bring myself to say anything. It would have felt like beating a puppy.

Yes, I just backed-off at that point, rather than giving him another response that would have sailed right over his head. For those who are of the opinion that "schools were much better in the good old days", I want to point out that this person just retired, so he did attend school in "the good old days".

I am only too familiar with that pronunciation.
Quite a few years ago, one of our faculty members used that pronunciation, and I can recall her telling us, "I oh-ways go down to Norf Ca-lina for my mother's birfday".
That type of lazy articulation sometimes led to confusion, as in the following situation:
We were engaged in 3 days of standardized testing in the school cafeteria. This faculty member was helping to distribute answer sheets on the second day of testing, and had to make sure that each student received the same answer sheet that he/she had used on the previous day. One of the first names that she called out was "No Oh-mera". She recited that name several times, nobody responded, and I recall thinking, "That's a strange name".
As the number of remaining answer sheets dwindled, I realized that there was a student whose name was Noah Almero, so I took that particular form from the teacher in question, verified that Noah Almero was indeed the name on the answer sheet, walked over to him, and asked, "Is this your answer sheet?"
He took the form from me, and at that point my colleague asked me, "I wonder why he didn't respond when I called his name?"
I answered her by saying, "Because you didn't pronounce his name correctly". She then stated that she had used the correct pronunciation, and that he must not have been paying attention when she repeatedly called out, "No Oh-mera". Clearly she couldn't even perceive the difference in pronunciation between her lazy articulation and the correct pronunciation.
What made this particular gaffe even more disturbing is that this teacher was (supposedly) an ordained minister, yet she was unable to pronounce "Noah" correctly.
