OK, I am impressed with this thread title, where the OP used the correct location for an apostrophe in a plural possessive! Kudos!

A couple exceptions to the rule:





Also, when referring to a word as a word, in plural. Ex:
"There were 847 the's in the first draft."

and I've been told it's proper to use 's when pluralizing foreign words.

That came up when we were making a poster, and I objected to someone using "Mahalo's" (thank you's).
She said it was proper for a foreign word.
I pointed out that since we were in Hawaii, it wasn't a foreign word.
A native speaker pointed out that Hawaiians doesn't use plurals like that, and it should just be "mahalo" no matter how grateful you were.
We all enjoyed the conversation, and put a paper flower over the 's.
