You are absolutely right. By far the vast majority of the tourists are considerate, polite, curious, and have enough common sense to be reasonably safe.

One summer I was fishing at the confluence of the Yetna River and Lake Creek between a group of Japanese business men and 4 Swiss truckers. We were there for three days and had a great time. Nobody got injured, everyone was courteous, and we limited out on salmon.

That has been my typical experience with tourists in Alaska. Only very rarely have I encountered Tourons, but as you say, they are the ones that stick out and get remembered.

This happened less than 2 weeks ago. An Alaskan family hiked for 4 hours in 115 degrees.

That's so sad....

and yes, there is a difference between a tourist and a touron. I freely admit to being in the latter category when I'm in an unfamiliar place in the lower 48 or in Anchorage. I get lost, miss planes, have a real difficult time driving in traffic, the crowds really get to me. My place in Oregon is back in the mountains and I only venture out for family reasons. With the lower 48 getting more third world by the minute, the thought of going back for any length of time is rather unsettling.

Lots of Alaskans feel this same type of culture chock; my own son announced when he was 19 that he was off to Europe for the winter, landed in Naples at 11:00 pm their time; I was a little worried about that. But he did fine. A lot of other kids don't, when they go Outside.

Very sad story. A family that displayed no common sense or knowledge whatsoever to hike in that kind of heat. They were tourons (as they say) from AK, obviously displaying no sense whatsoever. Sadly, these kinds are ALL over the place.

Alaskans have no special claim there. MOST people, no matter WHAT state they are from, are smarter than the "tourons" you speak of.

You can bet that these so called 'tourons' who make a**holes out of themselves when they go to Alaska or anywhere else for that matter, also make a**holes out of themselves at home too. They don't automatically become Einsteins when they arrive on their own doorstep. I also would imagine (and this is just my guess) that the worst offenders are the cruise-shippers. I personally wouldn't take a cruise anywhere even if the damn thing was free.

Not necessarily so. People do stupid things where injury or death could have been avoided. They underestimate the risks.

I've never taken a cruise and don't intend to. However, I have a friend who lives in California and she takes several a year. The last cruise she took this year she said was horrible; she said the ship was not clean, food was horrible, etc.

And it seems like wives or husbands, boyfriends or girlfriends are always 'mysteriously' going overboard! Convenient dumping grounds I guess.

"C'mon Honey, let's go on that cruise you always wanted to go on...right after I double our life insurance policy"
