Turns out the whole problem is that people don't want to face real conflict so they only play with words. If the world needs to "move toward" recognition of Taipei then imo Taiwan is not doing that great in terms of status.
Who wants to face a real conflict? You think a conflict between China and Taiwan would be wholesome like two plump toddlers chasing each other on a playground?
According to this discourse, the only thing Taiwan lacks is recognition by other countries, and the only reason why that is lacking is that China is an aggressor. Does the constitution need to be amended and the name need to be changed? Probably, but those are not imperative. One thing is certain though: worldwide recognition does not prevent wars. See Ukraine.
You gave a detailed informative response. Thanks for that. Seems to me Taiwan is not recognized because China forces other countries to choose. And they chose China.

They are not choosing China over Taiwan, they are choosing peace/money over morals. In other words, they are giving small victories to China to avoid conflict.
But there is no doubt, that the real support is behind Taiwan, which will be very clear if China tries to invade Taiwan.
Also, recognition won't protect Taiwan against a military invasion, just like it didn't protect Ukraine.
That Taiwan need to declare independence is a CCP talking point. It assumes that Taiwan is already part of the PRC and need to declare independence to no longer be part of the PRC.
But from Republic of China's point of view, Taiwan island belongs to ROC which is independent from the PRC. Neither DPP or KMT has ever believed that Taiwan is a PRC province. That means, Taiwan do not need to declare independence from PRC to seek international recognition.
The problem is both the U.S. and China signed an agreement that "Taiwan is a part of China". Unless the U.S. withdraws from that agreement, it's a moot point because Taiwan without the U.S. support is a sitting duck.

Be mindful of Japan... because they see the CCP threat and knows there's a chance they'll have to go alone in a conflict. CCP still sees Japan as their enemy. WWII has left lots of emotional and political scars between the mainland and Japan. Japan seems 'more' open to stationing nuclear weapons.
d) there is a pair of countries called North and South Korea that have been co-existing under exactly identical circumstances just a few hours away for decades..
South Korea has the U.S. military commitment to protect it from North Korea. This is not so obvious with Taiwan.
Technically the U.S. has the 7th fleet patroling the Taiwan Strait but question remains if the 7th fleet will intervene should China invade Taiwan? If the U.S. was to show commitment to Taiwan, why didn't the 7th fleet fighter jets intercept China's air force invasion of Taiwan airspace?
If the U.S. was under the previous Administration, then China will not even think of invading Taiwan but the current U.S. Administration is weak as evidenced with the Russia invasion of Ukraine, this will only embolden China.

Japan is the key in the western Pacific.
An american colony that only cares about manga lol. Their disastrous politics is the key reason I'm trying to stay away from this country as much as I like everything else about it (yeah earthquakes...).

Japan is not going to pose a serious threat to China without the U.S. military's backing.

Hence the reason they're floating the idea of allowing nuclear weapons on their soil.
They must arm themselves much like Germany realizes. They've made a big purchase of F-35's and put their first tactical aircraft carrier into service. In fact they are building their own 6th generation Fighter aircraft. Japan knows the world has changed and are responding to that change.
Japan and Taiwan have a long and sorted history, but Taiwan, Japan and South Korea make a formidable alliance. I'm going out on a limb and 'predict', the CCP will attack Taiwan before Japan is too strong. That means this will likely happens within Biden's window as president.
