I think some of the genius of Charles Schultz is that this strip could be taken by a theist as a heroic declaration of faith and by an atheist as a commentary on blind faith.
That he had the acumen to depict the issue at all suggests to me that Schultz was no fundamentalist, at the very least. I will add it to my list of idle Google searches to run in my spare time, to see what his life story was.
