It is understandable how many metro Atlantans (particularly those living within the five-county core of the Atlanta metro area in counties like Fulton, DeKalb, Clayton, Cobb and Gwinnett) might think that Cagle would be done politically.

But with this conservative-fueled firestorm over Delta Airlines ending NRA discounts in advance of a Republican primary dominated by deeply conservative pro-gun voters in a state that continues to be dominated by deeply conservative pro-gun voters more than 8 months in advance of the general election, Cagle likely not only is not done politically, but likely also potentially has put himself in position to win the Republican primary for governor without a runoff.

...Which more than likely has been one of the main motivations for Cagle's public stance against Delta after their disassociation from the NRA... To win the Republican primary for governor after some internal polling reportedly and supposedly has shown Cagle to be within striking distance of getting the 50% + 1 level that is needed to win the primary without a high-stakes runoff against another even more conservative GOP candidate like a Brian Kemp or a Michael Williams.

Cagle and his gubernatorial campaign have for months been looking for an issue that potentially could put him over-the-top of the 50% + 1 mark in the GOP primary... And Delta's disassociation from the NRA while a $40 million-plus fuel tax break was pending in the legislature gave him an issue that was ready-made for a GOP primary audience that fell right into his lap.

Cagle would have been better off getting his picture taken while standing behind Deal, watching him sign the tax cuts into law, instead of pulling this stunt. Then create an ad, saying “hey look we made ga #1 for business.” He easily takes the nomination and most likely the general. The GOP still thinks it has to win with southern conservatism in GA, when in reality it’s starting to cost them. Cobb already went blue in 2016. Gwinnett is next.

Well, in case anyone missed it, here is the video of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" opening skit from Tuesday night that weighed in on the Delta/NRA firestorm in a way that many conservatives (both here in Georgia and nationwide) are sure to be pleased with...

Also, here is the video from an interview between Georgia Republican gubernatorial candidate and state Senator Michael Williams of Cumming and Brianna Keilar of CNN on Tuesday.

Williams and Keilar notably tussled over Williams' seemingly unproven claim that Delta continues to give discounts to Planned Parenthood members after discontinuing discounts to NRA members...

CNN's Brianna Keilar pressed Republican Georgia State Senator Michael Williams for facts to back up his claim that Delta Airlines gives discounts to certain "left-wing organizations." Williams says if Delta is ending discounts for National Rifle Association members they should also end discounts for other "left-leaning" organizations.

Wonderful post B2R, thanks!

What an extreme though, from hysterical to yet another blathering embarrassment of an excuse for an elected so called Representative. These people are spineless slaves to an organization that values money and divisiveness over human life.

What a pathetic, blatant liar. What he really wanted to say was that Delta supports Gay Pride in their hometown and several other cities. His masters probably told him to hang back on that angle - for now. That's coming though.

Before this point he was considered the most moderate Republican candidate. This move might catapult him to win the primaries. But shouldering the blame of such a huge loss, he will lose some of the support he would have received from metro Atlanta in the general election. Im hoping that doesn't happen, but not for Cagle's sake
It is very understandable how many (particularly in the five-county core of the Atlanta metro area) could think that Cagle's public stand against Delta's disassociation with the NRA could backfire on him in the long run.

But the thing that seems to work heavily in Cagle's favor is that the Amazon HQ2 sweepstakes appears to be a big thing largely only with moderate and progressive residents in the core of metro Atlanta.

Outside of the metro Atlanta core, the Amazon HQ2 sweepstakes is not necessarily viewed all that favorably. The Amazon HQ2 sweepstakes is particularly viewed unfavorably with conservative outer-suburban, exurban and rural voters who fear that the move of an Amazon HQ2 into the state will bring more moderate and progressive voters into a Georgia population that is already trending heavily towards purple-state/swing-state status.

Heck, I know of many conservatives (particularly outside of the I-285 Perimeter) that are saying that they will be extremely happy with Casey Cagle if his public stand against Delta's disassociation with the NRA helps to keep Amazon's HQ2 out of the state because they fear of the tens-of-thousands of moderate and progressive voters that such an event would bring into the state.

There is a significant faction of conservative OTP voters that are actively cheering for Atlanta and Georgia not to win the Amazon HQ2 sweepstakes because they fear that it would make Atlanta much more political powerful (and even politically dominant) at their expense.

There is also a significant faction of conservative OTP voters that would not mind seeing a large multinational corporation like Delta Airlines leave Georgia because they feel that it would hurt Atlanta and help them regain control and unquestioned dominance of the state's political, social and cultural climate like they had in the past.

Cagle's stand against Delta's disassociation with the NRA works for him politically because it plays directly into that undercurrent of anti-Atlanta feeling that historically has powered Georgia politics and still tends to power state politics at times.

Wednesday's edition of the GPB (Georgia Public Broadcasting) political radio show "Political Rewind" talked about the Delta Airlines/NRA firestorm during much of the first half of the show.

Notably, there was a conversation with Georgia Republican House Speaker David Ralston about the continuing Delta/NRA firestorm.

Ralston generally is a relatively very moderately conservative Republican leader, but Ralston is facing a stiff primary challenge from his right in his deeply conservative North Georgia Mountain district. Ralston also has been targeted by conservative activists on at least a couple of occasions before back during the Tea Party era.

Ralston, who is dispirited by this big blow up between Georgia legislative Republicans and Delta Airlines (Georgia's largest private employer) after having helped to push Delta's $40 billion fuel tax break through the House before the fallout between Delta and the Georgia Legislature, seemed to want a compromise in the form of giving Delta the $40 million fuel tax break they desire in exchange for Delta continuing the discount for NRA members for at least another year after which point Delta would review the discount.

Ralston knows this is a serious situation, but as other Georgia political observers have opined, the $40 million fuel tax break likely is dead for at least this session and probably for the foreseeable future.

At this point in time, the only way that the fuel tax break likely can regain support from the Georgia Legislature in this hotly contentious election year is for Delta Airlines to somehow reverse its decision to discontinue discounts to NRA members, something which we all know most likely is not going to happen.

News that Georgia Governor Nathan Deal intends to sign the state tax cut bill with the Delta fuel tax position removed...

At a press conference Wednesday, Deal said he was frustrated by the “antics” of Republicans seeking higher office and said he would still seek to salvage a tax break for Delta. But he said he couldn’t veto a measure that also amounted to a sweeping tax cut for residents.

I’m surprise that no one is pointing out Delta employees bonous payouts to the tune of nearly 3 billion dollars the last few year. That definitely outweighs any tax cut Delta have received from the State, since a lot of that bonous money had to be reported to the Georgia Revenue and mostly spent in Georgia. Some of our State politicians are not that bright.
