It's sad that so many Americans stereotype or apply politics to people's choice of cars. If you pick Subaru, Tesla, Ford, or BMW. Some people immediately apply negative stereotypes. We are talking about cars which are just tools not some political or social denomination. C'mon now, we should all be able to freely pick the cars we like for the right situation without being stereotyped.
Toyota fan here; have several in our family. Those cars are reliable and they last forever.
If I had to replace my car, I would look for few years old Camry or Corolla, preferably a car that had one owner, lower mileage, car in decent shape etc.
I guess you guys are missing NEW and keep for at least 15 years. Yet several of you are advocating for her to buy a car that has several years use on it already.
OP, I have a car for you.
Prius V.
Yes, that particular model.
Pretty much, it's station wagon. Very spacious inside.
Don't listen to anyone. There is reason, Prius is a go to vehicle for cabbies. They run and run and run.
I am not sure, if they still make new ones but, you should no problem get certified used. Hybrid warranty is 100 000 miles.
I promise you, Prius is a superbly reliable vehicle. And, with gas prices soaring up, can't beat excellent gas mileage.
Go to toyotanation forum, hybrids, Prius, and ask there.
Out of all Toyotas you had as potentials, Prius V is the best option. Unless you want some spiff, then there was Lexus 200 hybrid. Which is same Prius, just with fancy badge and interior.
Hybrid battery replacement, if it fails, is around $2000. Not that bad. Several companies make aftermarket replacements.

I just saw a beautiful, new, charcoal greay Hybrid Honda CRV. Really nice. I don't know how much they are. I am afraid to look.

Unfortunately things are hyper-politicized these days. I will say that some people just stereotype people who buy "Brand-X" no matter what - even if it's not a negative political stereotype that they're promoting, then it's some other negative bias. All very tiresome.

I have not seen one political comment in here. The Original Poster is a 55 year old woman who wants an affordable reliable car. All the comments on this thread speak to cost of the vehicle, cost of maintenance and reliability of the vehicle.
Please point out exactly which post number you consider political. WTF. Not one person suggested that she buy a Tesla. Why don't you reread this and take your own political bias out of it and then you will understand that politics was not involved here.
Yeah, that was the worst advice I ever heard here on City Data. An older woman wants to buy Under $35,000 and is thinking of a Prius. Okay, so his suggestion to buy BMW or Mercedes (are you kidding)??? Maintenance nightmares and Expensive. Now he had one good point which was a Lexus; but, under $35k I am not sure what is available within a three year age range and you are always taking a risk buying used.
Maintenance isnt a nightmare on a BMW or Mercedes, and $35,000 is a great price for one. In 15 years you will see many more Mercedes and BMWs on the road over other cars. The fit, finish and quality is superior. I am just shocked at people recommending a Corolla. She has a budget of $35,000, the Corolla is the car you buy your daughter to send off to college which she gets rid when she starts her career.
