Borne by Jeff Vandemeer, who also wrote the Southern Reach Trilogy. He’s considered one of the New Weird writers, a genre that tends to “break down the barriers between fantasy, science fiction and supernatural horror” according to Robin Anne Reid.

I find his books uncomfortable, interesting and hard to give a synopsis.

I finished this one in 2 days flat...I can't understand the low reviews on Amazon, as I am giving it 5 Stars! The book is both wacky and at the same time brilliant!

"America Pacifica" by Anna North https://www.amazon.com/America-Pacif.../dp/0316105074
...
No, but the reviews on Goodreads, my fav place for reviews, look fairly consistent with those on Amazon, but with nearly a 1000 ratings.

According to Goodreads, Anna North has two other novels, if you're interested in reading those; they get higher reviews.

Yes, will definitely read "The Life and Death of Sophie Stark".

I'm guessing the book was just TOO WACKY for most, but for me, that is what I loved about it! It had a wacky brilliance to it

Still sticking to my 5 stars as I could not put it down!

I was thinking that might happen. I'm definitely keeping and open mind because he's an excellent writer but I'm not liking the Renee Ballard character as much as I like Harry.

I loved this book too! Not long after I finished it, I read Home for Unwanted Girls by Joanna Goodman. Different but I believe it was in the same lists.

Yes and many times! It took him so long to finish the series, it was necessary at times to reread the previous books. lol

I finished The Ditch by Herman Koch and was disappointed. Koch initially draws you in, but as the story progresses it veers off track leading into side stories that go nowhere and have no bearing on the plot which, in itself, was weak. The ending was equally disappointing. I thoroughly enjoyed Koch's last three novels. Oh well, three out of four ain't bad.
Presently reading Big Sky by Kate Atkinson. The fifth book in her Jackson Brodie series
