How much of how you think of these matters do you think comes from being from eastern Canada?
I think there are many different Canadas and have been for generations. It's an easy thing to forget - like my forgetting the Sikh fruit farmers in BC who have been there for a long time. Zoiste would have thought of that. Here in Manitoba I think of French and Ukrainian communities.
There is also a Chinese Canada. We have them to thank for the railway. There was extreme prejudice against them, like they were barely human. We can't just take other nationalities when we need them and then spit them out when we don't because they talk funny. They've been here for generations.
There are a lot of different Canadas floating around. I accept that your point of view is genuine but I find it almost unrecognizable from my Canada. So geography and history must shape our different views.
Historically speaking, eastern Canada has been much more diverse in the past than western Canada. Not sure what you're getting at here?
I do think that by the third generation in Canada, almost all women will have decided on their own to forgo the head coverings. Integration takes time.
Well I mean thats exactly what I was saying. Head coverings represent a very radical fundamentalist for of Islam. We shouldn't be so quick to shoot down cirticism of such coverings. Specially when many Muslims women themselves speak out against this.

Actually the opposite is true: the first photo of yours shows evils of colonialism, white supremacy and masculine oppression. The second is the result of decolonization and liberation. We are heading that way bigly.

Are you going to tell women what kind of shoes they have to wear too? Let them make the decision.

Where did I tell women what to wear? I am not against head coverings, but there is legitimate criticism of them. What exactly are you not understanding? Your own post showed how bad religious fanaticism can turn.

Your comment “We shouldn't be so quick to shoot down cirticism of such coverings” implied otherwise. Hence, my post.

There are legitimate criticisms and concerns over these head coverings. Do you think there is not? Do you honestly believe every woman in the very pic you posted of afghanistan in 2013 love having to wear that over their heads?

No, they don't all want to wear it, but it's not just the wearing of it that's the problem in Afghanistan- it's the other problems associated with that government. Governments change, as Irene's photos show. They changed one way and can change back again. But if we're talking about women in Canada, women are not so stupid that they don't realise they have rights here. And if they are that stupid, just how do you think society is going to talk them out of it? They have to want that for themselves for the change to be real.
There are some women who cover their heads as a cultural pride, exactly in opposition to the western idea of what women are supposed to want. Having an ornery bone myself in that regard, I can relate.

We are talking about Canadian women in Canada. They shouldn’t be attacked because of what they choose to wear.

Oh, amen, sister!
