In interpreting this verse your emphasis is on procedural knowledge, mine is on declarative knowledge. Under your interpretation love of God is conditioned on the procedure of obedience. It could be phrased " if you obey my commandments you love God." Under my interpretation, the obedience is a declarative fact of the love of God. It could be phrased "when you love God you are automatically obeying His commandments." IOW, it is the LOVE that IS obedience, NOT specific acts.

Yes, that is how I have for the longest time seen it, probably a good 20 years. Because you love me you will fulfill my commands.

What part of what Jesus said plainly do you disagree with? One is the root (love), one is the fruit (obedience to commandments). Also; did you forget that faith without works is dead? Seems like it. Peace

What you seem unable to grasp is that it is IMPOSSIBLE for there to be faith without works. The faith is ONLY reflected in the works - agape love for everyone involved.

And what you seem unable to grasp is that love is not a works, it's a Spirit....HIS. That makes it a ROOT, as all spirits are. The fruit is WHATEVER HE does, regardless of how it "appears" to us. Peace

I never said it was a works. I said it can only be seen in works. Love IS a Spirit and that Spirit is God. When you love, you are born of God and express that Spirit and when you express that Spirit it is seen in your works. That is why when you love God and each other every day and repent when you don't you can NOT sin.

Well it's not working for you. Sin is missing the mark, the mark is the mind of Christ, and the mind of Christ never denigrated His Father or His Father's words. Peace
