But you said we dont have any money and we can't afford it. Where our we going to get the additional $1 trillion we need to upgrade our roads from? To put things into perspective $1 trillion is 4000 times what Amtrak costed us in 2014.

Now you are getting it. The roads and bridges are falling apart because work that needs to be done is not getting done due to a lack of funds.

And where are those funds going to come from without tolls or increased gas taxes?

Here's something the Cincinnati area should look into. It has worked in Pittsburgh and now is being developed in Hartford. It's a much better use of taxpayer money than Slight Rail or the absurd HSR concept.

The people in DC will likely raise the debt ceiling yet again, pushing us further into debt. And then they will print more money which will devalue the dollar even further and dole out the money for some of the work to get done.

We have dozens perhaps hundreds of bridges that should be repaired or replaced but that won't happen anytime soon because the money is not there. Usually a road will be closed if a bridge is in really bad shape and detours around it will solve the problem. LOL Have seen this more than once until the funds are there to fix or replace a bridge.

So you want people who don't use the highways to generate the $1 trillion instead of using tolls or gas taxes?

Enough of the games.

It's a fact that suburnbanites are most responsible for the strain on our highway system. When you use more of a service you should pay more into it. Tolls haven't ruined New York's economy, so how will they destroy ours? It sounds like you just want a handout.

I asked a simple question since you seem so concerned about debt. If we borrow $1 trillion to fix the roads, how would you, not congress, generate the funds to repay that? What should we do when this issue arises again in the future and you still haven't invented flying cars from The Jetsons?

You are right, this is so much more a sensble solution than HSR. It is time the cities got their act together and looked at workable alternatives.

Mr. Minkey. I'd personally like to see another planet built between Earth and Mars. Would give us a nice round number of 10 planets vs. the 9 existing units. But I suspect the cost to build it will be prohibitive in our lifetime.

Perhaps if we stopped funding the EPA, Homeland Security, The Arts and probably 100 other useless agencies or entities that receive government subsidies then your precious HSR could be built. And also that money could be directed at the upkeep of our roads and bridges.

Rail at a local level can work as the following article shows. Note Cincy bus ridership is up.

Record 10.7 Billion Trips Taken On U.S. Public Transportation In 2013

It is not up to me to decide how to fix the roads. It is Congress that appropriates the funds at the state and Federal level and then local cities and towns. Another pointless supposition.

If you really think land based travel is going to be the primary mode of transit in a couple hundred years, think again. It may still exist but air travel of some kind will be the preferred choice of commuters.
