There was the Kon Tiki in the Sheraton Netherland?? Tropical setting with stars overhead, a waterfall and huts. Served Pupu platters and all kinds of tropical drinks. Great date place.

Ahh yes, the memories...
I took a young lady out to a lunch/date at the Kon Tiki back in about 1973. In spite of the fact we had a good time, we never went out again... too bad

Mr & Mrs Goyguy Sr used to enjoy an occasional parents' night out at the Gourmet Room atop the Terrace Hilton. That's the only other "notable" hotel restaurant from those years - at least, among those no longer around - I can think of.

On the Virginia Reel recipe, I doubt that anyone has that recipe since it was a closely guarded secret. We even had it mixed special for us at the flour mills. Employees would just open the bag of mix; weigh the desired amount; add water and fresh eggs; and mix. There was an unusual ingredient in it that gave it that unusual flavor and texture. Additionally, the batter was very tempermental, so we had to rush the batch through the fryer before it lost its ability to puff as it hit the hot shortening. By the way, eclairs are made from the same type of batter.
I lost both my parents in the last couple years and I have so many fond memories of going with my Dad to Daisy Donuts on E. Galbraith on Saturday mornings! The aroma was heavenly and he let me pick out whatever donut I wanted. My Mom always had to have the eclairs, and since she didn't each much, she would save half for later in the day, she loved her sweets!
Thank you again, I miss Mom , Dad, and our donuts.

The restaurant was originally called Hotel Mexico, then it was changed to Hotel Discovery and finally became Cafe Odyssey before we shut the chain down. I am one of the original owners and developers. It was fun while it lasted.
