No it's actually one of the most stable economies in the country. It also fared better in the Global Recession than the large majority of the cities in the country.

Not sure what that has to do with anything. Market cap seems like it would be more important to the stock holders than anyone else. Then again I'm not in finance so what do I know.

Detroit IMO is still the second city in the midwest, but MSP will be two in a short while.

Another stupid post by a wannabe tech/finance titan who seems to have enough time to rehashing repetitive posts on an internet forum.

If you look at the big picture, 1bn mkt cap companies mean nothing, NYC's economy absolutely crushes SV/SF (puny in comparison) economy. You always remind us Manhattan and Palo Alto have the two most important economy in the world but truthfully they don't belong in the same category. Snap back into reality.

It is also behind DC's economy.

Sorry.

However, I don't know where the original article got its data. Detroit's 2008 GDP was listed at $253 billion, not $200 billion as the article claims. On the other hand, Minneapolis/St.Paul has already overtaken Detroit in Gross Metropolitan Product - a slightly different measure - according to the 2009 US Conference of Mayors.

Still, the Twin Cities' GDP is growing at a faster rate, and so is the population. Detroit's metro is still larger by about 1.2 million people but had a 1% population loss from 2000-2009. The Twin Cities gained population by more than 10% in the same period.

It seems only to be a matter of time until the Twin Cities overtake Detroit in both GDP and population.
Not that I dsipute Detroits GDP according to PWC, but Charlotte is not ranked in that list even though it has GDP of $118.4 billion and a GMP of $115 billion. That for example makes the list suspect.

I don't know man, that looks like a pretty rusty manufacturing area. Man, what did the Twin Cities do in 1970 when all those steel mills shut down. Funny, I just argued another southerner in another thread about he kept claiming that "Yes, In fact the Twin Cities are part of the Rust Belt"

For those who want the numbers, here is the latest list, which was released on Sept. 24, 2009

Detroit MSA - 200,856B
Minneapolis MSA - 193,947B

Charlotte MSA - 118,350B
