Pittsburgh residents ages 55 and older are educated at a rate well below the national average, but residents ages 25 to 44 are educated at a rate well above the national average. It's one of many reasons why people who think that Pittsburgh is a "dying city" aren't worth listening to.

25-34: 34.7%

There's not much variance between age segments in the United States with regard to college attainment.

Pittsburgh college attainment by age segment

65+: 24.4%
55-64: 31.7%
45-54: 34.2%
35-44: 39.6%
25-34: 48.1%

This illustrates the inverse relationship between age and educational attainment in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh college attainment relative to the United States

65+: -10.1%
55-64: -5.0%
45-54: +2.0%
35-44: +5.0%
25-34: +13.4%

So guess what happens to Pittsburgh's overall college attainment once the older population expires?

Here's a reading assignment for some of you.
You're looking at "25+." I'm looking at "25-44" and "45+," because there's a huge -- HUGE -- difference between the two age segments in Pittsburgh.

Then there's this blogger from Chicago who further explains exactly what I've been trying to say ad nauseum:

Hence, the city is molting, literally discarding the remnants of its past. When the process is complete, which looks very close to occurring, the city left behind will be in some respects, a new, shining city on (many) hill(s). And an incredibly educated one at that, vying with Washington D.C. for the largest proportion of young adults aged 25-34 with post-graduate degrees.
But remember...I'm just a homer.

I get it. The death rate is higher than the birthrate coupled with the fact that nobody is relocating or immigrating to Pittsburgh is causing not only the city to decline in population but the entire metropolitan area. Doesn't sound like something you should be super duper proud of.

Well it made for a hell of job fair in 2009, when there were ~30,000 unfilled job openings in the Pittsburgh area. (The average salary for those jobs was between $35K and $40K.) The jobs were open precisely because morons throughout the country thought they were too good to be gainfully employed in Pittsburgh, and in the darkest depths of a recession, no less. Those fools can ****in' starve, for all I care.

Ewww, gross! I can't move there!
