Joe, San Jose population is 945,000 and the capital of Silicon Valley. The New York media people love SF so much. They're obsessed with SF because it's so much better than New York.
Lacking identity in this case really means not being able to take a city and associate it with something.
For example, Minneapolis. I can't associate it with anything really.
Anybody who knows the first thing about this area would immediately point out that it has a much greater Scandinavian influence than anywhere else in the country and that there are lakes everywhere, that it's liberal/artsy and people here love hockey and fishing. If you don't know as much it's because you haven't been paying attention and not because Minneapolis "lacks identity".

I don't think its due to my personal lack of knowlege. Moreso, the media's lack of conveying Minneapolis' identiy to the rest of the nation. Take Baltimore as i have used as an example. People understand its ghetto identity because the media really shoves it into peoples faces at times.
Minneapolis obvoiusly has an identity. But not a large national one.

Neither does Baltimore where the average American is concerned, apart from "rust belt" and that isn't an identity specific to Baltimore. "ghetto" isn't an identity, it's just indicative of a perception of high crime. All major cities have some area or another that everyone would consider "ghetto".
Again, ignorance of a place != "lack of identity".
I'm confused by that. Did you see the "!" prior to the equal sign in my post?
There aren't many people ignorant of NYC for what should be obvious reasons.
I've met people all over the country who can't place most "flyover" states on a map. It doesn't mean that all those places "lack identity and culture", it means there are lots of people walking around this country who apparently didn't get much ROI on the cost of their education.

Lakes. Maybe it's not nationally known for that, but it's sort of unique that way in that there are dozens of lakes scattered throughout the city. It's also home to the Mall of America and many people know it as being very cold.

take a look at this and you tell me how this image is relevant to this thread:
I'd say Minneapolis/St. Paul is VERY unappreciated in this country, mostly because people are afraid cold weather (or the perception), but it has quite of bit of culture and personality that I've never seen anywhere else. If you visited, I'd think you'd agree.
