in fact, it can be shown that building new rail lines out to the exurbs only enables more sprawl, as it makes it easy for people to live out in the furthest reaches of Collin County and still simply hop on a train to get to work...
but, OTOH, with a lot more people living in the ritzy parts of Dallas's near-downtown (the Oak Cliff, Oaklawn, Uptown, Deep Ellum, etc. areas), a trolley line might add to the urbanity... trolleys are all the rage in a bunch of cities these days and the FTA is funding new starts everywhere, not just Dallas (Salt Lake City, Seattle, etc.). Of course, buses serve the same purpose of a people-mover but at a much much less cost...but not a lot of neo-urbanists want to be seen riding a bus! lol
exactly. It adds to the urban appeal of Dallas, but it does make it easier for the pop to spread out to the burbs.
But families make up the bulk of city pop. the young hip single in the city is not going to out compete the family of 4 in the burbs.
Why the derision Houston people - jealous because you have one little rail line of a few miles while Dallas has almost 100 miles? And you totally side-stepped the Forward Dallas plan...
actually if Houston was smart it would keep the bulk of the rail within the loop with a few strands out to the airports, the energy corridor and the galleria.
Why try to urbanize the suburbs? let the suburbs be the suburbs and try hard to develop a strong urban core.
trying to urbanize the entire thing will be the down fall of Dallas. It is not promoting urbanity it is just making it easier for more single family himes to be built in the suburb.

We have light rail only in Dallas County. The other cities wanted light rail in their city, that's why it was built.

I am not saying it should not have been built hun. I am going against the notion that builing rail to the suburbs would improve the core. It will improve the entire metro, not just the core.
answer me this, which do you think is easier to densify, a 300sq mile area or a 10 000 sq mile area??

I would make more sense to densify a 300 sq mi area. The majority of the rail is in the Dallas city limits. But to reach the DFW airport you will have to go through the suburbs first.

What's the point of having rail that only serves a limited part of Dallas and the county?
you are promoting infill and a dense compact area. It attracts business, which means more jobs, and more jobs mean more people.
and the second rail I posted is the system in Paris. It certainly doesn't serve a small area. It does push into the suburbs but the area is already crazy dense.
again I am not saying that rail to the burbs is bad. all I am doing is arguing against the poster's point that DART will help Dallas with infill. I think it will help de fill
