While many SF restaurants offer panoramic views, the meal price usually includes a significant premium
Bank of America Building's Carnelian Room Restaurant
555 California Street / (415) 433-7500

The Carnelian Room ($$$$) in the Bank of America building at Montgomery and California offers great views. Unfortunately, they also offer very snooty service and eye-popping food prices. A drink there will run you about $8, and an appetizer about $13. You can sit and sip an afternoon glass of wine while admiring the view. The restaurant has the feel of an elite enclave at the top of a 52 story building. During the day, most of the restaurant is a members-only club. In the evening,

The Carnelian Room is a high-end restaurant with awesome views. There is a narrow bar area paneled in wood with lush music. This bar was used as a setting in the movie "Dirty Harry" with Clint Eastwood. The Carnelian Rooom is the highest public viewpoint in San Francisco. The best view is where two picture windows allow you to view Treasure Island, Alcatraz, and many skyscrapers. You will feel yourself looming over the landmark Transamerica pyramid. The elegant and quiet atmosphere is the best fit for couples versus small groups.
The Fairmont Hotel's Restaurant
Another ($$$$) snooty hotel with an expensive restaurant bar at the top. The location is somewhat inconvenient, but well placed for views at the top of Nob Hill. Reader C.M. notes in 2/97, "Some of the best city-views can be had by having a nightcap in the lounge atop the Fairmont Hotel."
Cityscape Bar and Restaurant
333 O'Farrell St / (415) 923-5002
San Francisco's Hilton Hotel offers great views from the 46th floor of the hotel. With 14 foot floor-to-ceiling windows wrapping the room, the views are incredible. This is a great late-night spot and also often offers a champagne and jazz brunch on Sunday's.

View Lounge
55 Fourth Street / (415) 896-1600
The View Lounge at the San Francisco Marriott hotel is a popular after-work stop for San Francisco locals planning their evenings on the town. The lounge features a bank of industrial wraparound windows that reveal expansive vistas. Music is typically mellow jazz over quiet conversations. Sunsets are amazing as the light disappears and the city lights come into view.
Top of the Mark
1 Nob Hill / (415) 616-6916
The Top of the Mark at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel is a classic San Francisco landmark atop the 19th floor of the hotel. The bar has been open since 1939, after it was converted from a penthouse hotel room. Soldiers on the way to World War II often used this as a taking off point for their journey across the ocean. The Top of the Mark features over 100 delicious martinis in a swanky atmosphere. The music is often l ive with a horn-intensive jazz band playing next to intricate chandeliers. The views are 360 degrees and stunning -- don't miss this one!
Harry Denton's Starlight Room
450 Powell Street / (415) 395-8595
The modern decor of Harry Denton's Starlight Room - including beautiful chandeliers - brings patrons to a cool experience. The bar is located atop the Sir Francis Drake Hotel with a hot dance floor that features vistas of San Francisco. Harry Denton is a San Francisco party favorite - and his dance-party bar does not disappoint.

Skyscraper restaurants are widely favored for a romantic evening like Valentine's Day, special anniversaries or on a honeymoon. Or, a skyscraper restaurant is a great way to get your first full view of the sights in a once-in-a-lifetime trip to any of these famous cities, even with a whole family.

When it comes to prices we're not talking Denny's. You're going to pay for the view, but these skyscraper restaurants are worth it. Most serve lunch and dinner and some serve breakfast or Sunday brunch. This price scale is based on dinner entrees (main courses):

Oakland's Kaiser Center redoes Rooftop Garden and it's a honey

Published on Friday, August 06, 2010
Last updated on 07:07AM, Wednesday, August 11, 2010

The bridge at the Rooftop Gardens at Kaiser Center is one of the many features of this hidden gem.

It’s a hidden gem, nestled unobtrusively within Oakland’s downtown business district. Chances are, you’ve passed by it – or parked under it—dozens, if not hundreds, of times, never knowing it was there.

The Rooftop Gardens is a three and a-half acre restaurant facility with an adjoining garden, complete with a wooden bridge, pond, neatly-manicured lawns, trees and ample space for up to 1,500 guests, poised atop the Kaiser Center garage at 300 Lakeside Drive.

The Rooftop Gardens certainly qualifies as one of Oakland’s best-kept secrets. It’s been around for 50 years, having been built in the days of Henry J. Kaiser. It’s said to be the first rooftop garden built in America post-World War II.

The venue is perfect for weddings, luncheons, corporate events, soirees, concerts, gatherings, greetings, book signings, pronouncements … you name it. However, it’s been woefully under-utilized - until now (save for the occasional event, such as a summer lunchtime concert series). Yet as Oakland’s renaissance continues, surely there’s a need for a top-notch, slightly swanky venue equally adaptable for either low-key or high-profile events.

Steve Snider of Oakland Venue Management said he first started hearing whispers about the Rooftop Gardens four years ago. After finally seeing it in person, he fell in love with it and dreamed of opening up the space to more events. But it wasn’t until recently, when his management firm teamed with event planners Inspire Productions, that his dream became a reality.

“We had an amazing opportunity to step in and help the Swig Company manage the special event facilities at the roof garden, including the old Central Park restaurant and the Lakeside Theater, which was formerly known as the Kaiser Auditorium, with a 400-person sit-down theater with a foyer that overlooks Lake Merritt,” Snider said.

In addition to the roof gardens, the restaurant and the theater, there are conference rooms in the facility as well, making the entire set-up a versatile, multi-use space for seminars, symposiums, retreats and more.

Snider says he’s “thrilled” about the roof garden in particular, which he describes as “an amazing, one-of-a-kind private garden on the fifth story of a parking garage, which was envisioned by Henry J. Kaiser himself.” Snider hopes the venue will become the go-to spot for weddings, and in fact, he’s planning to hold his own upcoming nuptials there.

On Tuesday, the Rooftop Gardens held its grand opening celebration, with a hand-picked list of invited guests culled from Snider’s preferred vendor list. Jennifer & Todd’s Café Soleil catered the event, treating guests to, among other things, crab cakes and bacon-and-filet mignon wraps. Across the bridge, guests lounged, socialized and took full advantage of the open bar, which was serving Hangar One Greyhounds with fresh grapefruit juice (one of Café Van Kleef’s signature cocktails). A wedding photographer took snaps and showed her portfolio and for dessert, there were cakes, cookies and a chocolate fountain, complete with strawberries and pretzels for dipping. As the function wound down to a close, Snider led a tour of the Lakeside Theater, which drew “oohs” and “ahs” from the promoters and event planners among the crowd.

Currently in use by a church group, the theater reminded one of a smaller, more intimate and better-maintained version of the Berkeley Community Theater, with comfortable, swivel-back seating and a gorgeous hardwood-floor stage. The view from a large window overlooking the lake came as advertised and a passing gondola made for a picturesque Kodak moment.

Whenever I visited NYC I used to love going to The View, the Marriott Marquis' rotating restaurant atop Times Square. Average food, but at 46 stories (I think) it has fantastic views of the entire city, Jersey and all. Nice to know it's still there
