I ask because Kansas City is losing two long time restaurants that the locals always like to take out of town guest (mostly for the city views). One is as revolving restaurant 45 stories up on top a Hyatt Hotel and the other is a stationary restaurant 20 stories up both with stunning views of the city. A while back KC also lost a rooftop restaurant 32 stories up on what is now a Crown Plaza hotel.
Now KC will have none and all that space will become meeting rooms or lounges and the reasons given are people staying in hotels don't want to eat in hotels anymore.
Are other cities losing these types of places? I have a lot of fond memories, proms, just late night drinks etc. Sad to see them go and I loved going to these place for the views of the city more than the food at the restaurant.
Here are a couple of pics.
I remember being in them in St Louis and Indianapolis, but I'm pretty sure the one in St Louis closed too.
Now I'm dating myself. We went to prom in the '70's at "Top of the Rockies" restaurant atop the old Security Life Building (not a hotel obviously) in Denver. That was the only rooftop restaurant I can remember there. No idea if it still remains.
District of Columbia and suburbs (Crystal City section of Arlington County, VA). When I was in Milwaukee in 1983 they also had one but that was a long time ago.
San Francisco has the Top of the Mark on top of the Mark Hopkins Hotel on the top of Nob Hill(along with a few other similar top floor bars). Portland has the Departures Lounge and Restaurant on top of the Nines Hotel in the center of downtown with an outdoor deck. Seattle has a skyview bar on top of the Marriot downtown.
Atlanta has the Sundial Bar and Resturant at the top of the Westin. It's something like 55 stories up and the elevator ride up will make you weak in the knees. The elevators are on the outside of the building in glass tubes.
XIX on the top of the Bellvue and R2L near the top of Liberty II
On a recent visit to Chicago I had a drink at the Wit, outdoors on the top of the Wit hotel and seemed like a decent space though could see it bringing in some bridge and tunnel crowd on the weekends
