To me, all L.A has is nice weather, famous people, Hollywood and high cost of living.
If you are into all that L.A is great.
But Chicago has everything else a big city should have like the obvious once: it's urban, walkable ( you don't need a car ), have great public transportation, architecture, and an amazing sky line. I also like that we have 4 seasons.

When you want to get out of LA, you can make a quick trip to San Diego, Santa Barbara, Malibu, Santa Monica, Huntington Beach, Pasadena, Laguna Niguel, Newport Beach, Disneyland, Palm Springs, Las Vegas, San Clemente, Big Bear... even San Francisco within a few hours.
When you want to get out of Chicago, you can make a quick trip to... what? Milwaukee, Gary, Detroit, the all the excitement of the Midwest?
L.A. is superior in every way, shape, and form. It's really not a contest and I'm not surprised that L.A. is dominating.
Being iconic around the world, yes.
But there's no way in heck that anyone would walk around anywhere in Los Angeles and say.....
"Wow, this has much better architecture and more beautiful urban charm than Chicago."
If they did, I'd recommend them either go to an optometrist or a therapist immediately.
