White Plains would probably be the top city in most states.

New York especially Long Island is THE most expensive place in the US to live. The uber high cost of living- taxes, taxes and more taxes plus insane real estate prices and rents are forcing many to leave the area. You look around and see so many empty store fronts all over. Many companies are leaving or simply closing up due to the high costs. Not only that, there is a lack of good paying jobs especially for those over 50 is making relocation much more attractive to many. The infrastructure as a whole leaves much to be desired. The roads are in serious need of major repair. Bridges have been poorly maintained that they need replacement at even more billions of tax payer dollars. And the tolls are going up higher and higher all the time and the services are going down. PSE&G rates among the most expensive utilities in the country. NY also has one of the worst governors in the country. Heating oil ranks among the highest in the country. On Long Island there are so many superfund sites that there are major clusters of cancer in several towns. There is a major opioid epidemic on Long Island where anyone can get Narcan for free to help someone who over dosed. MS-13 has embedded themselves in several Long Island towns where it is dangerous to walk down the sidewalks in the daytime and forget about at night. You can't go swimming in NY metro waters without risking your health. The water is a pea-soup green-brown and you cannot see your hand infront of your face on a good day. Depending on your view, NY has the toughest gun laws in the country which has not curtailed crime at all. The lwas make it difficult for honest people to own guns and easier for criminals to have them.

On the plus side, NYC has one of the best mass transit systems around, when it is working. If you are into theaters, NYC is the place to be. Doctors are a dime a dozen in NY and you are not far from a hospital or urgi-center.

Florida is fairly warm all the time. The cost of electricity is fairly low so running the A/C all the time does not hurt the wallet that much. Along the west to center of the state and from the north to the mid-west of the state is the largest concentration of sink holes in the world. Some people have not been injured when the ground opens up, but have been killed as well. There is a growing python problem and the state is doing very little to curtail it. You never know when you get a visit from a gator or croc. They are dangerous and very ferocious. You simply cannot shoot or capture one but have to wait for the authorities to respond. Fire ants are all over so you need to be on the alert for their nests. Miami is the hub for many illegal Cubans that have sneaked in and the crime is very high there. Speaking of which, Leigh Acres in west Fla was once a boom town and when the dot-com bubble burst so the the area. Jobs were lost and homes were foreclosed. Criminals broke into the vacant homes and became centers for drug usage. You can get a home there cheap but you risk your life doing so. Retirees come to Fla for the warmth and many of them who should not be behind the wheel of a car still drive. They seem to be the number one cause of accidents.

The cost of living in Fla is one of the lowest in the county and the weather makes it ideal to retire there. jobs are plentiful but not in the high-tech arena same with heavy industry. There are few superfund sites mainly do the the lack of heavy industry. The hospitals are not as good as in NY, but are not bad either. The waters are clear and you do not have to worry about getting some disease from swimming. Fla is very famous for hurricanes and they see more then their fair share of of. But they are used to then and know how to survive them. Fla also offers homesteading help for those making the move into the area.

At the end of the day, NY vs Fla, Fla wins hands down.

NY is the safest big state in the country in terms of crime rate, if I’m not mistaken.

NY varies so much in terms of COL, that some of this depends on what parts of each state you are comparing as well.

Long Island is NOT the most expensive region in the country. Its definitely 100% behind San Francisco, San Jose, the bay Area, Boston, Los Angeles, parts of Northern NJ, Hawaii, etc .... With the salaries on Long Island, its pretty fair for the COL there. Florida is also pretty expensive for the wages it has. 40k jobs, home prices nearing 300k and everything is so spread apart you need a car for everything. I personally am NOT a fan of NY... but its still leaps ahead of Florida.

Ranking the states based on QOL and quality of the place/services, Id rank New York at about #15 and Florida at about #35. Move to jersey and you get NY at the tips of your hands with luxury living.. you just got to pay!

Also after Massachusetts and Rhode Island.. New York has the 3rd lowest murder - gun homicide rate in the country? Where are you getting your stats from?

NYC > Miami

Florida > New York

My dream would be a city like NYC with good mass transit and affordable housing in a warm place in the country, like Arizona or the South. You can’t really change the climate, but you can change the city.

New York easily for me.

Beyond the obvious discrepancy between NYC and any city in Florida...

-New York has tons of cute, small, historic towns with lots of charm. Florida's small towns do not tend to be so charming.
-Four season climate > Shifting between warm and hot all year long
-Mountains and hills > Flat
-Much of the state is much less susceptible to the negative effects of climate change

And I could go on. I love visiting Miami / Key West in the winter, but that is about it.

There's plenty of historic and charming small towns all over Florida so I'm not sure this is as much of an advantage as you think.

Mt. Dora, Cedar Key, Ponce Inlet, Fernadina Beach, Seaside, Micanopy, Deland, St Augustine, New Smyrna Beach, Key West, and the list goes on.

And actually the weather in Florida is more variable than that. Plus half the year from about late October to mid May the weather is mild and incredible and some of the best in the US.

We may not have mountains but we do have gorgeous coastline, rolling citrus groves, sunset skies, coral reefs, lush tropical foliage,...

My biggest negate with Florida is that it's new development (especially around the dreaded Orlando area) seems to be very unsustainable, highly car dependent, unwalkable, concrete heavy and cookie cutter like. I compare Orlando to fast growing cities like Raleigh or Atlanta and get so turned off from its backwards style of urban planning. Ive honestly never have been somewhere so backwards in urban planning. The best example is Lake Nona... everything is off of Narcoossee Road, the high school, 60,000 residents, shopping strip malls, etc... they just built everything off of one 6 lane highway??

I cant see Orlando thriving in 40 years... As people want to be walking distance to high density shopping and restaurants, Florida's sprawly poorly designed suburbs will not be able to provide that for it's population.

Where have you been besides Orlando?

Forcing entire regions of a metro, or entire small towns/subdivisions, onto one arterial road/highway is the Sunbelt's favorite pastime. And then they don't build any public transit whatsoever and wonder why their roads are full so they turn around and say "we're too full" and developers just build another cookie-cutter subdivision a few miles down the road.

I'll at least give the Miami metro credit for having actual urban centers lining the coastline, many with some form of public transit. South Miami, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Downtown, Little Havana, Wynwood, Hollywood, Ft. Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Delray Beach, West Palm Beach, and I'm sure I'm missing some as well. That area has urbanized very well. The west side of the metro is way different, but still, it's generally on some form of grid even if there is typical suburbia cul de sac designs within those grid lines. In that way, LV and Phoenix aren't too different, but Miami has the massive added bonus of basically the entire eastern side of the metro along the ocean.

Orlando is a lost cause, though.
