Richmond. More urbane, scores higher on the physical-attractiveness front, grappling with the legacy of Southern apologists in a sensitive fashion, and I generally like Virginia anyway.
Davenport, Iowa, or Rock Island, Ill.
Davenport, IA. Cute city with nice people. Iowa has a very strong ag culture. It is the Mississippi of the Midwest. Very rural, down to earth, and has not changed very much.

Another tough choice. I would choose Spartanburg given its proximity to Greenville and Charlotte. Easy location. I also like the city has its own cute downtown that is better maintained. Knoxville is nice enough but still has some work to do downtown. It needs a food hall, retail, and more plaza space.

Chattanooga, TN or Wilmington, DE?
I've wanted to visit Chattanooga for some time now; I imagine its location in the Appalachians is quite picturesque. (I also know that the local daily was for many years the only other paper The New York Times Company owned. I don't think it still does own it.)
But Wilmington is one of those cities that looks bigger than it is, and it's located in the part of the country I'd rather live in. It has become something of a satellite of Philadelphia, but it retains its own personality and some great local institutions.
Oops, someone posted a quick reply while I was composing mine: Telluride. Not as hoity-toity and TED-Talky as Aspen. (Not that TED talks themselves are worthless; on the contrary, there are loads of worthwhile ones. It's the sort of self-congratulatory air that hangs around the conferences that I find unappealing.)
Tampa or St. Petersburg, Fla.? (I somehow managed to miss this pair when I was posting my twin-city series.)
St Petersburg right now, based on my knowledge of it from a few years ago. Its downtown was as urban as anything in that region, and very cute, relaxing, and close to the water. I would not be surprised if in the next decade my preference overwhelmingly because Tampa, based on expected development.
Chattanooga, easily. Wilmington has a lot of crime, for a small city.
Telluride, Colorado, or Aspen Colorado?
Aspen... it's a more populous town with more amenities and it's more centrally located within the state.

East Lansing, MI vs Newark, NJ
East Lansing... I think I'd prefer Newark when I was still single but East Lansing seems like the much better place to raise a family.
