Tuesday night, Raleigh recorded its 12th murder, putting it on pace for ~18 by year's end. That would be significantly less than last year's total (26) and only slightly above its average for the 2010s (~17/yr). Current murder rate sits at 2.58 per 100k...
Norfolk recorded its 23rd murder yesterday afternoon with a stabbing in Norview. Pace to end year with ~36, which would be a decline from 2017 (39) but an increase from its 2010s average (~33/yr). Current murder rate of 9.39 per 100,000...
Interesting take on the peer group that includes both cities, here are the average murder rates for the '10s (through 2016):
Richmond recorded its #33 homicide of 2018 on Sunday with a shooting in Church Hill. That gives Richmond a current rate of 14.54 per 100,000...
Richmond is going to have a substantial decline in homicides this year. The city is on pace for ~51 murders by 12/31, which would be a 31% decline from 2017's 67. This year's homicide tally will still likely eclipse the city's decade average (44)...
Charlotte had three weekend murders, pushing it to 35 on the year with a rate of 4.07/100k. This is another city experiencing a significant decline in 2018--Charlotte is on pace for ~54 murders this year. 2017 saw 87 murders, and this would represent a 61% decline in homicides in just one year...
~54 would also place Charlotte below its 2010s annual average (58)...
Sacramento has had 25 murders year-to-date, good for a rate of 5.02/100k. The city is on pace for ~38 murders this year, which would be one better than 2017's 39, but still more than its 2010s average (36/year)...
0Correction for Richmond there were two murders on Sunday; the second was a 78-year old woman stabbed to death by her 59-year old daughter...
So Richmond's current line is 34/14.98. That puts Richmond on track for ~52 murders by years end, which would still be a 29% decline in homicides from 2017...
In other news, Baltimore, which is currently at 190/31.05 homicides, is on pace to finish with ~292. This would be Baltimore's first year under 300 since 2014 (211). This has to be thought of as an achievement after the hellacious previous three years, and would represent a 17% drop in murders from last year. Does anybody know what the decline in Baltimore can be attributed to?
DC (103/14.84) is on pace for ~158, which would be it's most since 2015's 162...
Philly currently at 212/13.41 is on pace for ~325, it's highest total in 6 years (331 in '12)...
I mentioned Norfolk (23/9.39) and Virginia Beach (9/2) earlier, both of which are on track for declines from last year (Norfolk on pace for safest year since '15, VB since '10!). So every major city in the Mid-Atlantic is on track for reductions except DC and Philly...

Correction for Richmond: three weekend murders. A woman shot in a car on the Southside on Saturday died today...
For the year Rich is at 35/15.42, on pace for ~54 murders...
This was a bloody weekend in the city. There was also a man shot in the same car as the girl who survived; the 78-year old woman's son was also stabbed by his sister; 6 people were injured in a Shockoe Bottom bar shooting; a man and woman were both shot at Southside Plaza, the woman is critical; a man was shot at Whitcomb Court; and another woman was grazed on the Southside...
That was a running tally of Friday/Saturday/Sunday, 15 people shot or stabbed and 3 homicides from this weekend...
