56 murders for 170,000 people? That's quite shocking really. that's 33/100,000 rate. That's over three times the rate of my city of Chicago. That would be like Chicago having almost 900 murders as of July!

Chicago is still trending down, 25% reduction from last year:

2016: 352
2017: 370
2018: 279

That's as of July 18th.

The difference when you talk about murder rates is Chicago maintains too high of a murder rate over way too large of an area. If you expand square mileage for other cities to equal square mileage of Chicago murder rates would frequently decrease for other cities. I can speak to Boston where if you created a 225 sq mile city by including cambridge, Sommerville, Brookline, Arlington, Quincy, newton etc etc the rate would be way less than it is. Chicago’s rates may be less than other cities but it’s absurd how high it is over such large areas

It's been hovering around the 30 per capita for years. Jackson just over look and it's going through a spike this year. Last year the city ended with 64 homicides, so it's probably heading toward a high 70s.

Explain that in a different method. Chicago's homicides are highly concentrated to a small sq mi of the city. Jackson is half the size of Chicago and the homicides are more spread out.

I disagree that Chicago’s homicides are concentrated to a small square mileage of the city

Springfield just had another homicide this morning, for a city of 60,000 only 25 miles from Dayton it's shocking to see the numbers be so close.

Vast majority of the homicides happens in a small number of the 77 community areas.
