IL is #2 in the country for residents leaving state after college. It is kind of sad, as I have said many times Chicago has great infrastructure and architecture and tons of office space but it is having a hard time attracting and keeping top talent (at least in compared to U.S. context)
On finance, chicago does have a pretty big share of insurance industry.
It completely blows away rest of midwest though.
It completely blows out pretty much the rest of the world. IL is number 2 for having graduates leave? That seems a little off..

Replace world with Rust Belt, and most people will agree with you!

Anything out of the Rust Belt, and you are crazy! Chicago leads the nation in population loss!

It's amazing how you're able to demonstrate your ignorance over and over.

Lakal/DNCR/SittingDuck/yoyobubba! has officially lost it!

Sorry, troll, but it's 2009!! Why are you posting false Census estimates from the 1990's?

FACT: Chicago has lost more population than any other U.S. city, from almost 3.7 million to around 2.7 million, or a loss of one million residents!

FACT: Chicago has lost more population since 2000 than any other U.S. city, from nearly 2.9 million to around 2.7 million, or a loss of 200,000 residents!

Last one out of Chicago, turn out the lights!

The last two official counts were in 1990 and 2000 boy genius. Every other year since then is not a real count and therefore not an actual population number. You do realize that the US Census is every 10 years, right?

And do you even know what a troll is? Who is the guy who keeps trying to bring up Los Angeles?

Lakal/DNCR/SittingDuck/yoyobubba, please only use one screen name! You aren't fooling anyone!

Well, if you want to pretend it's 1999, and ignore Chicago's recordbreaking population losses these past 10 years, then be my guest.

Chicago STILL lost more residents than any other city, from 3.7 million to 2.9 million, or a loss of 800,000 residents!

Ouch! At that rate, Chicago will be a ghost town in less than a century!

You've lost it. You literally think anyone who doesn't bash Chicago and comes to its defense from your mindless obsession over it is the same person. I have to admit this is entertaining as hell so I'm sticking around for it.

Who is the one pretending to live in the past? One minute you tell me its 2009 and I'm supposed to live for today and the next you turn back the clock to the 1960's. Are you really being serious?

At least you are interested in talking about actual cities now, and not suburbs and Grandma's farmhouse like a couple pages back. What happened to the Osito who only counts metro populations?

I agree, Lakal/DNCR/SittingDuck/yoyobubba, we should talk about the present!

Let's forget Chicago's massive decline during the past half-century, and let's look at the shell of the city as it exists today:

1. Murder capital of America
2. Voted most miserable city in America
3. Most polluted city in America
4. Highest commercial office vacancy in America
5. Highest population loss in America
6. Most corrupt city in America

So the question is, how do we save this once proud city? How do we turn things around?

Anyone have any answers?

It seems that the current solution is to turn the city into a giant Schaumburg, by building strip malls, parking lots, parking garages, and townhouse condos everywhere.

Basically, in order to revitalize, Chicago is attempting to turn itself into a giant suburb. Will it work? Time will tell!

This is a tough one (finally). DC, Boston, and San Fran. are my favorite cities (yes, I am a bleeding heart liberal). Never been to Houston or Chicago, but I would give Chicago the edge based on what I've seen and heard.

My final answer would be Chicago since it makes the most sense as the No. 3 city.
