RJRobb2 is right. Alabama under Bear Bryant won the 1982 Liberty Bowl, defeating Illinois 21-15. It was the last game he ever coached. I've read a few different biographies on Bryant (there are several), and if memory serves he commented " I'll croak in a month" in his last press conference. And did. Paterno no doubt decided he didn't want to go out like that. I believe his quote was "As long as I'm healthy and the University still supports me, I'll still keep coaching."

And millions of people who believe in half-truths, vigilante justice, and my way or the highway, are rejoicing today. They're probably the same people who claimed that Joe Paterno was "playing the sympathy card" when his family announced that he had cancer.

Rest in peace, Joe.

I know that everyone has their own thoughts on Joe Paterno and whether or not he should have done more in re: to the Sandusky (yes...the guy who actually is accused of the crimes!) case.....but can we try to keep it respectful? He is dead and his family is hurting right now. The man did a lot for college football. Try to keep hurtful comments that his family might read to yourselves.

And if you can't be respectful of Joe Paterno, at least be respectful towards his family.

RIP JoePa.

I am reading between the lines in the news stories and I think (as mother of adult son who is cancer survivor from atypical cancer at the age of 11) that Paterno likely
had more than one type of cancer which has gone unreported,
that he had some questionable medical oversight, and
that he (like many others) probably ignored early cancer warning signs--like he probably ignored signs that things weren't kosher with Sandusky...

I am sad for his wife--long marriage and apparently very happy/in tune with each other makes losing a spouse catastrophic event...
have friend who is going through same thing this weekend with his wife dying after protracted kidney disease problem

but I bet the pelvic fracture earlier this year was first indication that there was cancer--and that the family said it was "treatable" lung cancer because he did not want to be known as "incureable"...
too much pity there and JoePa never wanted pity...whatever his character traits might be...

You are dead on about the pity. JoePa would never stand for someone showing him pity.

As soon as it was reported that he had cancer, I figured he would not make it more than a year. Cancer shows no prejudice and at his age is very hard to overcome.

My thoughts are he had no complicity in situation and should have been allowed to die with dignity,Sandusky should have been stopped a long time ago, there is complicity there by others.
