It can, and in bad years it definitely does. The smoke saturation can reach a point where it's not even safe to be outside for extended amounts of time, especially if you're exerting yourself. Even if it doesn't quite reach that level it's just plain not fun to be smelling smoke with every breath you take.

This year the smoke was considerable here in Southern Colorado and it wasn't even from local fires - it was all from the west coast.

We don't know the answer to the first question. It certainly did not use to be an ordinary thing, but it is becoming more common. I would say right now the prognosis for the coming year isn't good.

I have been outside when it is smoky and while it isn't like you can't do anything, it isn't very healthy and the smoke can be quite irritating to your lungs, eyes, etc., at times. Think of staying in the smoke trail from a camp fire and trying to do your workout, etc.

Aside from immediate/in-the-moment irritation, there are also longer term effects of persistent air pollution that can be severe for some.

On the Fajita Scale of tornados a 110 MPH wind is at the upper end of the F-1 category (F-1, moderate damage, 73-112 mph).

On the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale a 110 MPH wind is top end of a Category 2 hurricane: 96-110 MPH.

In other words: Holy Cow!

There's a map in this article:

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo.-Multiple growing and fast-moving grass fires are forcing evacuations in Boulder County as strong winds continue to blow through the area and spread the fire to multiple homes.

Quote:
The Boulder County Office of Emergency Management is telling residents to evacuate if they see fire. The OEM instructs residents to go east or north. All of Superior and Louisville has been evacuated. Parts of Broomfield are under pre-evacuation notices.

Evcautions are in effect for this mapped area:
