Excellent news; we have an excellent chance to regain the number 1 population spot because Charleston is hemmed in by a lot of other municipalities - MP, NCHAS, Hanahan, etc. that are incorporated already.
Charleston's only hemmed in to the north and east. Daniel Island isn't built out yet, and Charleston annexed Cainhoy, which has barely started it's mega development, and theres nothing hemming the city to the west.
It'll be interesting to see if both Columbia and Charleston can fix their donut hole issues.
The state of sc should allow donut holes of say less than X acres in size to be annexed whether the owner petitions it or not...i know i know its a property rights issue but at some point all of these swiss cheese donut holes costALL the taxpayers more money when it comes to inefficent allocation of services and resources

That makes too much sense which is why it won't happen.
Also Columbia should swallow more if forest acres. There are businesses plural
Literally like five meters after the sign on forest drive
LOL....never ever ever gonna happen. Forest Acres and its little brother Arcadia Lakes were created specifically to keep Columbia OUT. I think Forest Acres was founded in the 1950s when suburbanization was first kicking in and its founding fathers wanted to control growth. Then some developer likely go to them and they started to allow more commercial growth that we see typical in older inner ring suburbs and Forest Drive blossomed. Arcadia Lakes fearing a take over by Forest Acres did the same. These cities play a game of chess with each other and the City of Columbia to keep from becoming totally surrounded. If you pull up a map of Forest Acres.. they actually annexed a railroad right of way beginning at Decker and running north towards Alpine Road to make sure that Columbia doesn't enclose them AND to have access to all of the undeveloped land along Trenholm Road extention. Arcadia Lakes annexed up to a commercial strip along Two Notch for the same reasons though they have no interest in commercial real estate because they could certainly may a play at Columbia Place and double their tax base while providing zero services.....
