My dad always awed at the big wide roads in Columbia when he was a kid, driving in from where he grew up- in Greenville.

And yeah, while a 30 story building isn't anything stupendously marvelous, I hope at least they design one that fits with the skyline but has a very modern, sort of edgy "world class" look to it. People that aren't city nerds like we are, do look at skylines and use it as a barometer to the size of a city.

I'd really be interested to know too, where this is targeted to happen. I know some guys bring up the lot at Assembly and Gervais (technically IN the Vista), although who knows if they'll be able to exclude that area from being prone to the Vista height limits.
My family is the same way! Both my parents are from the Upstate and went to Clemson. When they were graduating and decided to move to Columbia they were "nervous to live in the big city!" I also remember my aunt who lives in Greenville talking about all the traffic and tall buildings in Columbia too.

Its no knock on Greenville at all and obviously that has not hindered any growth or development up there, its just different and I think thats what makes all three of our metros so great, they are different and offer different vibes.

A charter school specializing in science with about 300 students will soon open on Marion Street just south of Elmwood Avenue. Plans call for an expansion up to about 600 students.

I think I read it here but did the mayor say that he expects $1b in highrise construction within the next 4 years? That is a big big number and a decent number of buildings. For comparison, the new Duke Energy Center was close to or at $1b, it has 50 floors, a 10 story underground garage and about 1.3m sq feet.

I hope he is at least 50% correct, $500m would be a great number to hit.

It would be phenomenal. My guess is he probably meant mid rises and high rises. There are A LOT of mid rises already in the works, especially residential.
