I am not sure what kind of space SCBT has but the small building on Gervais has to be cramped for a bank of that size.

On another note, jut saw the "no place like home" commercial for Gamecock athletics on Sportsouth, great commercial with terrific shots of downtown Columbia. And, just read Gene Sapakoff's (Post and Courier) article on baseball in SC, he referred to Carolina Stadium as a palace with postcard views of downtown Columbia (sound like he may be a Carolina grad based on logic found on this board).
Agreed and Lol at the Gene Sapakoff reference.

You all make great points and I am glad we can recognize the benefit USC has on the city without making it THE city. Columbia, similar to Baton Rouge, Knoxville, or a smaller version of Austin, have colleges playing a major role in their cities, but do not define the city. Columbia for a long time was defined by USC, and not that USC has stopped growing as it continues to do so in a rapid fashion, but Columbia is also growing at that same pace and utilizing USC to better the city rather than trying to make Columbia a college town.

All good things!

Carolina is a big part of Columbia, it does not define Columbia. There are many employment sectors that make the city a diverse growing economy.

Not to be redundant, but here's another article about First Community Bank's new downtown location with a rendering of the renovations taking place. There should be no question as to whether the building attains landmark status. It is the definition of the 60's' and 70's architecturally, and the planned architectural additions will add an appropriate touch.

This rendering is great. Love this type of building from that time period.

Here are some pretty good shots of downtown from The State newspaper in connection with a report on parking garages.

Some good quotes from the article

“In the 15 years I’ve been involved in parking, we’ve had one purse snatching in all of the garages combined,” he said.

Auto break-ins are more frequent in garages without security cameras – albeit the break-in rates are lower than parking on the street.

They did a nice job showing that the fears people have about garages are not really true.

Yeah if you read the comment section of The State when downtown if featured you would think that downtown Columbia is like the moving 'Escape From NY" with blood thirsty homeless laying in wait for some poor soul to stumble into their urine drenched stairwell.....or a scene from any movie about NYC in the 1980s with a lone woman noticing the footsteps behind her as she walks to her car are not echos from her stelletos....

I still believe that many Columbians are generally afraid of parking garages especially if they have no prior experience of parking in one except in a major city where its more commonplace...

That was before The State required you to log in with your Facebook account to comment on articles. That has all but eliminated that contingent on the comments sections.
