Doing an upgrade on an older computer.

Reviving a relic computer which was very expensive and is just collecting dust.
(consider downloads which are available on distrowatch.com specificity Q4 Debian from 386 to 12 core rock solid and resource conservative multiply versions that fit any project)

Just expanding your knowledge about what makes computers tick.

But lets just suppose that you have or have been given a really old computer and there it sits, doing nothing because it's time has past. I mean this computer is so old that you grandmother gave it back to you, after you had given it to her years earlier.

Well before you throw it out, because the earlier suggestion above of loading Debian Q4 couldn't cut it.

Here is another plan. This Operating System will bring back the dustiest, old computer, and make you proud.

I downloaded the ISO and and burned it to a DVD today, pulled a bad hard drive on my work station and ran the OS live via DVD.

With my hard drive out of the way and posing no risk to the recovery I planed on doing later I just let the DVD spin up and do it's thing. In a few minutes I had the system up and running.

What a super Little O.S. with 6 browser windows open I only was using 137 meg of ram of my 4 gig of ram 16 year old work station.

Another short video explains it way better than I.

Have fun.

OK if you watched the video untill the end you have seen the old dusty computer brought back alive. I took this experiment a little further.

Below is My Computer screen shot of the Linux OS ANTIX which I spoke about in the last Post and was also tested in the previous video. Note the ram usage with 6 Browsers windows in the screen shot. MSN, Yahoo, YouTube, Windy, Zillow and Travelocity are open and 3 of which have movies running. Placed on top of it all is the a screen shot of the control center just to give an idea of the look of this OS.

Later I installed the Chromium Browser and many other assorted programs which brought the RAN usage to 600 meg repeating the same demonstration. Of course the OS has limitations but for someone who just uses their computer to browse the internet, email, etc, while using the oldest computer in town, it will do the job just fine.

Got an old computer you gave up on, this is a great introduction to Linux without spending a dime. Even if the hard drive is junk you can run this Operating System in a DVD live, after you have burned it to a disc or Loaded on to a USB drive to begin with.

Correction I was actually using a bit more ram originally 170 MEG (see the usage in the photo below.)

Here the screen shot of my computer which I am referring to in the picture below. Have fun.

Default A full stepby step PC build guide with a lot more detail.

[quote=corolla5speed;63367639]How to build your own computer.

Building a new computer build from scratch. Here is another point of view.

Lets look at a computer build from a Windows 10 point of view.

This expert PC builder speaks plainly, with a lot attention to detail that covers the subject of building a modern computer very well.

Install of Intel, AMD, and Ryzen cpu's are all covered and a great deal of attention is paid to Liquid Cooling options.

Finer points are also brought out about balancing air flow giving a number of examples and options.

Power supply and cable management are explained in detail complete with work arounds, limitations, and with future growth in mind.

Most importantly is the many details pointed out in this video which give warnings, options, workarounds, and sources for additional help.

Last, The Windows Operating system from purchase, download, install.

Also the motherboard, video card, drivers and the EMP (extreme mother mother board profile) are downloaded, installed and activated.

This young man does a good job and deserves many thanks. Enjoy.

Default How to build your own computer.

The Windows expert has just arrived and gave some great advice on how to bring your slow windows computer back up to speed.

If you have followed the thread, you have seen a variety of computer specialists build a number of kinds computers and give great advice via video and written instruction on the subject of computer building. From the extreme of used budget computer purchase advice. Also very expensive gaming and graphic workstation builds have been outlined. Many other great options have been discussed and demonstrated. We have also seen computer instruction via video which can help a person advance themselves via certification into a internship or job in the computer service sector.

From there we have seen a number of old computers brought back to life using Linux Debian Antix.

I have just found a Windows expert who has given us his time and excellent advice. In this next video Dave a retired Microsoft Heavy Hitter is going to show us how to save and speed up (our daily driver) Windows computer which we do not want to part with. Dave gives great advice and lots of details on how to make your windows computer run fast again. Listen carefully, take notes, pay attention to the details, warning, caveats, and take it one step at a time. Back everything up before hand and reboot after any major changes..

If you have cleaned up your windows machine in the past and been successful, I would still listen carefully, because this guy has written a lot of the software in which he is giving instruction on in this video. You won't find many people in the computer business who have reached his level sharing this kind of specific computer service advice at length for free. Thanks, Dave.

Enjoy the video.
