The 10 story biomedical building proposed by Winstanley Development at 101 College Street in Downtown Crossing received its final approvals this week paving the way for the building’s completion by 2022. Great news. Jay

Outdoor dining experiment a hit so far in Downtown New Haven

Ray Andrewsen felt like he was in Paris. Alana Dina, the Big Apple.

In reality, they were dining on pear and walnut salad and guacamole on College Street in New Haven — not inside eateries, but right out on the sidewalk, part of a Covid 19-sparked experiment that’s breathing new life into downtown’s battered restaurant industry.

With the help of the city, College Street restaurants have moved more tables out on the sidewalk and into the parking lane of the street, while a full lane of traffic has been claimed for pedestrians, as part of the gradual reopening of business during the pandemic.

The experiment is to continue at least through August. Some people want to see if it works as a long-term solution, here, and in other cities across the country.

So the next phase of the city’s Downtown Crossing project is underway. I never understood why the city is doing this. The project reconnect Orange Street to South Orange Street and was the requirement of Liveworklearnplay, the former developer of the New Haven Colosseum site. The problem I see is that this creates a giant multi road intersection that will be difficult and unfriendly for pedestrians to cross. It eliminates the direct connection from I-95 to the Downtown Crossing/Air Right’s Garage which was a key feature of traffic handling back when the Downtown Crossing project was first approved. This will create a major bottleneck. I think this money could have been better spent. JMHO. Jay

I’ve walked by that College Street outdoor dining experiment. Packed every weekend. Those restaurants have quite an advantage.

It more of a benefit. Leaving the train station sometimes its hard to make a left to go towards church to get into Downtown because of traffic. Its a pain to gown down state to get on geroge. Its easier and a straight shot for police department also to get Downtown quicker

That went up so fast. Just drove by it the other day.

There’s also renderings for the new Coliseum development. Don’t love the look, but better than a surface lot.

New restaurant in Westville from owners of Geronimo and Shell & Bones:

Thank you. Great to see progress and restaurant openings

Asked about any jitters he may feel about opening a new restaurant amidst a pandemic, Franco-Camacho took a breath, smiled. Then he said, “I go by: The best cure for fear is action.”

Wow, what an owner. That's how life is done in the US. To the fullest!

Yep! Pretty cool.

A few others that have opened in New Haven recently:

Provisions on State (fancy butcher)
Blended (juice bar)
Haven Hot Chicken (any day now)
Somos Arepas
El Segundo (2nd location, 1st SoNo)
Michelina’s
Crafted by Hand
Vegan Ahava
Edible Couture
Meya-Gumi Ramen
Havenly Treats

All opened after pandemic hit. I also give major credit to Olmo for completely adapting their dining room into a takeout place for breakfast and lunch items. Their bar is an order and checkout counter now. They went from a pretty successful restaurant to being swarmed. Smart.

Sadly, a couple really amazing places closed, Next Door and Beer Collective. Next Door still does takeout from their Big Green Truck. Their pizza is superb.
