Then there's the time test which says that the deduction is only allowed if I stay at the job for at least 39 weeks (9 months). What if I fail to complete the probation period again or something?

And most importantly, you can NOT deduct the expense of breaking a lease, which is $2,000 in my case.

Therefore, only about $2,000 of my moving expenses are eligible for deduction, which means that the tax impact would only be a benefit of approximately $600. Whoop dee do.

See the instructions to IRS Form 3903. And that's assuming that the law doesn't change for tax year 2016.
I will defer to you since tax is your job

Why are you thinking so negatively?

God knows if another 4 months would have gone by until my next offer. And I only have 7 weeks left of unemployment. The situation would become very dire, and I cannot let that happen and start depleting $3,000 a month of my savings. It's just too much of a risk to take, and I have a feeling it would not play out well.
4 x 3,000 = $12,000. That number is a lot bigger than paying 2-4k for relocation.

Not to think negatively, BUT, I have been scarred from my experience of having paid $3,000 to relocate from CT to OH out of my own pocket, just 8 months ago, only to fail to reach the end of the probationary period. So, I just want to be certain and prove to myself that I can pass the probation period at my next job and keep the job for at least 9 months.

Wrong, because that $4K of relocation expenses would go toward living expenses instead. Besides, I still have $5K left of unemployment benefits to be received.

Then you have to change and put work first, which sounds like something you are unwilling to do.

You know you won't get that unless you're actually unemployed, right?

Yes, but to recover $4,000 in relocation costs will take a good 8 months, which sucks. I typically save about $500 a month, after my living expenses.

Man you are too much. YOU chose to move to Ohio wantonly. You are choosing to move back. Nobody owes you anything. Your sense of entitlement is comical. It costs MONEY to do the stuff you are doing. Give us a break...geez.

I guess if you don't get through the probation period, you should probably consider that (a) You're incompetent or (b) You have health/mental health challenges that prohibit you from retaining a professional job.

If neither of the above are true, you should have no problem passing the probationary period.
