Mid Afternoon 4 Panel map. Temps, Wind Gusts, Wind Chills, and Dews.
Bone Dry and Cold day.

Only 3° at 3:30pm at BDL?? If the Max of 3° holds there, it will be the coldest January Max temp since 1981. 2nd coldest on record (since 1905). 1957 didn't pass 1°

Now I'm impressed. These impressive cold shots seem to be happening more recently (since 2013)

Zoomed out..

Temps and Upper heights. That Upper level low is right over us. HUGE reason for this and the winds. It's a Vortex spinning aloft and that frigid air aloft is mixing down to surface!

We been below zero last year. Jan 2018.

January 1985 wasn't impressive. January 2003, 04, 09 were all colder. They just typically mention the daily records....

Not saying this cold isn't. It is impressive... but its not rare.

Sunny and Single digits at 10am. Crazy

Maybe it wasn't as prolonged as the later outbreaks but the numbers certainly are impressive. For one thing, today's date in 1985 is the only time since Feb. 1934 that NYC recorded a high temperature below 10 degrees. Based on forecasts it could be argued that this cold wave is as short as Jan. 1985.

No because I believe in many places the high temp occurred at midnight. I know for example high in NYC was 14 at midnight (though they are back up to that temp now), though BDL was 4 at midnight and hasn't gotten there yet (3 right now as you say, very impressive high temp). BDR was only 10 at midnight but is 15 now (I am guessing part of why it is so much colder at BDL today is snow cover and not simply climatology?)

I checked out Mt. Washington's temp this morning, and it was -56 with windchill.

Now it's -30 without windchill and -80 with! (their record low for January is -47, set in 1954)

Somewhere I have a pic of the observatory crew outside in minimal clothing during a cold snap. Cam, have you been up there?

I remember Hilton Kaderli getting blown over up there once. They showed the clip from when he retired from CBS channel 3 of Hartford.

I still can't figure out why they get such extreme conditions with "only" being at 6,288' ASL.

I think it's more that tourists can see it. Other mountains in the Northeast are like that as well, I just think it's documented there more. A good example is Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondacks, which is almost 1500' lower than Mt. Washington but gets very similar weather:
