The airmass over is is the coldest of the season. It's below 0°F at 5000'. I know sounds funny since the surface is close too but we don't always have an airmass at that level below zero.

5000' Temps.

It's below 0°F over the Atlantic off NJ, NY even as far south as Delaware and Maryland.
Ocean Effect Snow showers out there.

Keep this up and the Long island Sound will start freezing over like Feb 2015

Lost power last night at around 830pm in the New Haven area, it came back on at 2am. House temp dropped 8° (10° in basement) during that time. I had the heat on higher and heat on in basement just in case it went out. Luckily it wasn't out too long with these frigid temps.

No blocking in the North Atlantic. That simple.

No blocking means airmasses and Jet stream flowing freely in and out instead of getting "stuck" over us.

Also, Pacific moisture carries warm Pacific air so if the track isn't perfectly off the coast, we get warm and rain.

How's that for simple in a complex environment? :-)

Thank you, I was trying to think about how to explain it to him and yours is a lot better than what I was going to say....

No even I will say this one is not "you know what", in fact if you go into NOW data for a place with a long record like Central Park you'll find that in the "old days" (mainly because we seemed to have more cold spells then) it actually wasn't that uncommon in winter to have below zero weather perched between periods where it was in the 40s and up. January 1876 is a good example where it was 68 degrees on the 2nd but 12 degrees two days in a row two weeks later.

Currently 3 here. This cold is impressive but will have to look into the 1985 cold as mentioned in Upton's AFD.

Anomalously deep upper level low will move over New England this afternoon continuing to usher in the coldest air of the winter season so far. While this air mass is of arctic origins, record lows for January 21 were all below zero set back in 1985 at most climate sites. Record min high temperatures were also set back in 1985 and in the single digits. Temperatures early this morning will generally be near 0 across the interior and middle and upper single digits elsewhere. Blustery NW winds will make for wind chills this morning -15 to around -20 across Connecticut, the Lower Hudson Valley and W Passaic and W Bergen counties in NJ. The wind chill advisory remains in effect for these locations until 18z. Elsewhere, wind chills will range from -10 to -14, but it would not be out of the question a few isolated spots touch -15. An SPS has been issued for our NYC, Long Island, and the rest of NE NJ zones to address the wind chills outside of the advisory area.

It's just for that day. Which is why I hate "daily" records. Doesn't really say much most of the time.
We been below zero last year. Jan 2018.

January 1985 wasn't impressive. January 2003, 04, 09 were all colder. They just typically mention the daily records....

Not saying this cold isn't. It is impressive... but its not rare.

Sunny and Single digits at 10am. Crazy

Don't move to Hamden! lol

I feel for the people without heat. It's a domino effect too. No heat = pipes bursting after a while. I hope standards change for our area. They don't insulate and protect pipes enough.

Seems like these Arctic blasts are happening more now.
